Reg cab 4 cyl gas mileage improvement.

Ive got a reg cab 2wd 5 speed. With the tires at the recommended 29/30 psi I was getting 20 mpg.
After inflating all tires to 34 psi my mileage went to 23 mpg. I do mostly city driving and noticed that with the higher pressure I coasted alot farther and faster which allowed me to take my foot off the gas earlier if I was coming to a red light, stop sign etc. The handling of my truck improved as well. I usually go with the mfg. recomendation but my truck felt like the tires were flat when I did that. Keep in mind we have 10% ethanol in all our gas down here so our mileage will always be lower than states with pure gas. I was able to drive an extra 50 miles on my last tank and gas went down 7 cents during those few days.

I've got the same truck. I've got my tires at 40 psi, but I carry around 800lbs of work equipment in the bed. I think around 35psi is right for an unladen truck. I noticed an improvement in gas milage also, however, my gas mileage has continued to improve since I pumped em' up from the factory recommendations. So I'm not sure if it's the air pressure or it's just the engine getting broke in. When I first got the truck I was getting 23mpg, at about 2000 miles I aired up to 40psi, mpg went up to 24. Since then it has slowly creeped up to 26mpg now with 12000 miles on it.

I agree. My tires are up to 35 and I got 22 MPG city driving last fillup w/ ethanol. That's with shifting at 2,000 RPM with a 4x4 2.7.

My reg cab 2.7 4x4 gets 23 mpg city commute with the tires @34lbs Psi. I normally shift at 2k also (about 70% of the time). Sometimes I test how fast I can accellerate, this is the best 4 cyl. I have ever driven. I got 27 mpg @ 60-65 mph (Highway) when the truck had less than a thousand miles on it.

I'm finally getting in the 24 to 25 range...up from 20-22. Although painful, driving conservatively and cruising the slow lane on the freeway (65-70mph down from 75-90mph) makes a huge difference. Tires in the 35-38psi range also help.

I am getting larger tires (I have 2x4) and I thought that would make a difference but you 4x4 guys seem to be doing just about as good as me.

Good to hear some figures from the 4 cly guys, it seems like there are so few of us

My truck has gotten 24-25 since the day I bought it with 10k miles. It doesn't matter how I drive it, around town it's always the same. I have even taken the truck on a long road trip and still got 22 at an average speed of 80 MPH. I did manage 30 on one tank but that was driving 55-60MPH for that whole tank. That sucked, I would rather spend more and get there faster. My truck has the automatic trans so I don't know if that makes any difference when compared to the 5 spd. I didn't see any change when I installed the XR wheels either. I love my truck
