Lockable Bed Extender

Hi all. Sometimes when I put my sports equipment in the bed of my '06 access cab I need to put the tailgate down. I have a lockable LEER tonneau cover but would like to add a bed extender that weould basically be very difficult for someone to remove. Even though my tonneau cover is down and locked there is enough clearance for someone to remove an OEM bed extender by simply lifting up on it. Has anyone come across a bed extender that would be a bit more secure? Thanks

you have 2 options... POP n Lock or use one of the D rings with a vinyl coated bike lock.

I use both if I use the bed extender unattended.

Pop & Lock won't be effective. It only prevents someone from releasing the tailgate latch. They can still jack the bed extender by cutting the straps. The bike lock is more interesting, but they can still just slide the tube(s) out of the plastic bracket and take it that way.

Yep, Shackle bike lock though the D ring, add cable if needed. Works great for when you leave you bikes or skis unattended in the bed too.

If you saw my homemade bed extender post, you'll understand noone would bother stealing that.

I use the cable type lock on mine, it allows me to flip the extender back and forth without having to remove the locking device every time.

Yes, you could remove the one phillips head screw from the pivot point and steal the whole thing.

Locks and security devices only keep honest people honest.

No, Marc. What I was saying is that the plastic brackets that the tubes fit through are only held in place by friction. You can slip the tubes right out of them without any tools at all, just a small amount of force. Then slip the bracket out the bike lock and slip the tubes right back in.
