I read the thread the other day about the bad center caps but just wanted to add my experience with my center caps. First I would like to say that I have my 2006 extended cab trd offroad Taco for nearly 7 months, have over 22,000 miles on it, and besides the beautiful dash gap everyone else seems to get, have had no problems with it and love it.
Anyways, a few weeks ago I noticed a missing center cap. It was no big deal. I just called the dealer, and he asked me to pull one off and check the part number for him and I did. When replacing the center cap I broke a tab off of it and the dealer said they would be $40 each. I went to another dealer in my area and they ordered 2 for me free of charge (warranty). The next week I went to get my new center caps placed and the dealer broke one of them while putting them on. He apologized and ordered another. Yesterday, I went to pick it up, and he refused to put it on due to fear of breaking it and handed me the cap in a plastic bag. I tried for a few minutes to get it on and was afraid of breaking it myself, so I just threw it inthe truck and left with 3 center caps on my wheels. Today, I went to get a set of Bridgestone Revo's on my truck. The tire guy pulled off the first center cap, and what do you know, a tab was broken off on it. The other 2 that I had on were fine, until the tire guy broke one putting them back on. So I have broken 3 center caps in the past 3 weeks. I am utterly disgusted with the piss poor effort Toyota put into designing these parts. I know there is probably some trick to it or whatever and I should know how to, but it is a damn center cap.I guess I will get some new wheels whenever my warranty runs out unless Toyota mans up, redesigns them, and issues a recall (not bloody likely).
Thats pretty bad luck, its almost funny if you think about it. "he refused to put it on due to fear of breaking it and handed me the cap in a plastic bag."

I had the 17" alloys, have taken them off and put them back on without a problem. I don't know what's wrong with you, but the ones i had worked just fine

hmmm the Caps on the XR 18's they use metal springs inside to hold them in and they are SOOOOOOOOOOOO hard to get off...it takes soo much to squeeze them and pop them off. I dont have any tabs on mine that could seem to break..
