Tailgate paint chipping

I noticed while washing my 2005 Silver Reg Cab 4x4 Tacoma that there are dozens of tiny paint chips on my tailgate. They are concentrated in the area between the tailgate handle the the top of the tailgate. The width of the area is about the width of the handle. Very odd. This is the only area on the tailgate with chips. I also have a tonneau cover. Could the cover be causing some type of concentrated wind pattern that is causing road grit to hit this area? Anyone else have this problem?

Other than this, I have not had any chipping problems.

Sounds like bad paint prep. That is not an area where your paint should be taking a beating and chipping. Go to the dealership and demand that it be fixed.

I have some paint chips in the same area right next to the handle! Weird!

do you drive very fast in reverse on the highway?

I think it's from my 200 mile trip home with my tailgate down!
