Rear Locker Question

I have the Pre runner non TRD. Is there a locker that can be put in the rear that will work similar to the on that comes with the TRD package, with a push of a button.

If not -

Not one like a Detroit locker but one that will let you have some driveability and not chirp around corners.

(couldnt find this in a search, sorry if it has already been covered)

If you want a push-button locker, your best option would probably be to find a rear diff. from a 98+ Tacoma that had the TRD offroad package on it and swap it into your truck. Check your local junkyard or even ebay. You may want to look into a limited slip rear diff instead of a push button rear locker if you are not going to be doing a lot of heavy offroading in deep mud or soft sand. A limited slip rear diff. will automatically lock and force your rear tires to spin at the same rate whenever one of your rear wheels starts to slip. The TRD locker was/is designed to only be used at low speeds (less that 5mph) and can only be engaged from a complete stop. The limited slip will kick in at any speed. I had a locker in my 2004 Tacoma and I have a limited slip rear in my 2006 Tacoma....the limited slip is much more useful in on-road situations as well as most offroad situations. Like I stated earlier- the locker is really only useful for crawling through DEEP mud and extremely soft sand.

There is no such thing as a "limited slip locker". You have open, limited slip, or a locker. A vehicle can be driven faster than 5mph with a locker engaged. If I were installing a locker on a daily driver I would go with a ARB air locker. BTW

On my 2004 (until I did the gray wire bypass mod) my locker would automatically disengage when I hit 7 mph, and it would only engage in 4wd low (this wasn't an issue for Prerunners, for obvious reasons). Toyota put this saftey feature in place so someone young (or stupid) person wouldn't keep it locked and get up to high speed, it's all fun an games as long as you go in a straight line, however as soon as you turn the wheel things can get dangerous in a hurry. After I did the gray wire bypass it would engage in 2H and would stay locked until I turned it off....I still had to be at a complete stop to engage it though.

I have to fully stop to engage mine, but once it is on I've had it up to 55 down a curvey dirt road with no problems. I actually think the locker is detrimental if you want high speeds. It seemed to want to kick the ass end out more if I broke traction than if I didn't have the locker. Noticed the same thing with the LS I had on my old F-150.
