Well I know you guys are gonna think I'm moron but I just gotta vent this off my chest. I have 9000 miles on my trd sport 4X4 so I decide I'm gonna do my own oil change this time. Well I drain the oil out, replace the plug thingy and fill er up with 5 quarts. So away I go down the road and after about a mile she quits shifting as I was pulling over I hear a loud thunk from the engine. Turns out I drained the tranny fluid instead of the engine oil so when I put the engine oil in I actually had 10 quarts instead of 5 in the engine.
So I have it towed to the stealership..both tranny and engine needs replaced to the tune of $9600!!!!! ouch that hurts
Man, I am so sorry to hear that. That really sucks. So, what will you do? Do you really have $9600.00 lying around to pay for it? Good luck.
Well I have no choice but to pay it, I do have the money but it's gonna put a BIG dent in the savings account...my wife aint too happy with me right now

Transmission damage is a given, but after only a mile, I would expect the likelihood of seal damage in the engine, but to replace the engine? that seems excessive. I think you need a 2nd opinion (at least).

I am going to get a second opinion but they claim the oil level was so high that the crankshaft was hitting the oil and bent the connecting rods and damaged the crank itself

It always hits the crank... def get a second opinion. take it to an indy shop.

It sounds like the dealer is doing what they do best (taking people for a ride). I highly question the engine damage. At this point you should be able to find a tranny from a wrecking yard (many Toyota SUV's and trucks use this tranny). I bet if you find a good honest shop you could walk away from this much closer to the 3k mark.
Man that sucks.....Truely sorry to hear about that!
I have to ask though....."Why didn't you check the oil level before running?"I am always paranoid that I add too little or too much.

It hits the paddles but the rods don't get submerged and go splashing through the oil. If there was a clunk I would not doubt for one second there is major internal damage with that much extra oil.
Could probably get it fixed for cheaper somewhere other than the dealer, but there is a reason why there is a fill line and its not only to make sure you have enough.
I can't say anything about the stupidity of draining the wrong fluid. I did it in my wife's VW once. Tranny was in the same relative place as my superduties oil pan and I drained it. BUT I know the difference in the fluid colors and I know better to check the level of the fluid before driving. If you don't know the difference in tranny fluid and oil or you don't check fluid levels before firing the engine then you have no business changing your oil. Obviously you didn't change the filter either or you would have found out the oil wasn't drained.
Taxx, we all make mistakes, man. Go easy. I'm sure the guy feels bad enough without you berating him. And I'm sure he's just telling this story and embarrasing himself for the betterment of others so this doesn't happen to someone else.
Do a search if you want, but, I did the same thing (drained tranny) and so did several others on here. However, most caught it before it was too late.

Not trying to berate. Sorry if it came out that way. I guess looking back it did. Just trying to spread the word. I see this on too many forums and I can't understand why.
It's just human nature to make mistakes, I guess. But, on these trucks, for some reason, that is an easy mistake to make if you get in a hurry (like I did). I had even changed the oil in this truck a few times before, and still did it. I pulled the plug and just rolled out, not checking to see the color. So, I drained the whole pan. It was when I rolled back under that I saw what I had done.
