WTK: Largest tire size with stock 17" wheels/no lift

Hey guys,

I bought a DC, long bed, 4x4 '05 Tacoma last year and am finally going to start modifying things a bit. When I bought my Taco, I looked everywhere in my region for a 4x4, long bed, DC, Sport model, but was told by all dealers I spoke with that the Sport model with the DC and long bed was not available in my "region." So, I went with everything but the Sport option and figured I was close enough.

Well, It's been about a year that I've had the truck and really the only thing I miss is the 17" wheels. So, I got on Ebay and bought a set of the 17" Sport wheels. Now I need tires. I understand the stock tire size is 265/70/17", but would like to go bigger (larger diameter/height) without suffering any ill efffects like tire rubbing. I don't want to remove the mudflaps as I feel they really do their job of saving my paint from road debris.

Eventually, I want to do the lift thing, but for now I think the wheels and tires will satisfy me. So, does anyone know what the maximum tire size I can use with the stock 17" wheels is?

Thanks,
Cincylance

Stock tire size is 265/65/17 which is about an inch shorter than the 265/70/17. The 70 series is going to be about right without rubbing if I remember right.

Great info. Thanks!

Cincylance

PS - I'll try to post pics when I get the wheels/tires on the truck.

wrong!

I have a 2005 DC Tacoma prerunner and had ordered 265/65/R17 tires, but they accidentally put 265/70/R17 tires on the truck. They are BF Goodrich A/T KO's.

The 265/70/R17 tire has some definite clearance issues with the wheel well on the truck.

I would warn against using this tire size unless you want to modify the mud flaps, because the outer knobs on the tire will rub the plastics on the mud flaps. I'm going to try 265/65s next...

...more like maybe wrong & maybe right

Some 265/70/17 tire models work on some trucks. Some people run that size without any rubbing issues for road driving. Others get rubbing on the front flaps. Also, don't forget that even though different manufacturers have tires in 265/70/17 they do not have the exact same dimensions.

Wow, this post was brought back from the dead...4 years old!

I put the 265/65/17s on my truck with the sport wheels and I have no regrets. Everything worked out awesome and it really gave the truck a balanced look. I do a lot of highway driving and not so much off roading, so the Dunlop Grandtreks were a good choice. They have done well in the snow and mud too. I've never even had an issue with getting stuck.
