2006 Tacoma Immobilizer in key (with pics)

Is the immobilizer in the key one that needs to touch the key itself or is it one that transmits wirelessly? I want to get one of the switchblade key fobs and it looks like I'll have to transfer the immobilizer over to the new fob. I'd like to know if I'll have to find some way for it to touch the key or just find room in the fob. Has anyone done this yet? Thanks,
John

it's seperate, it doesn't have to touch anything just be near the lock cylinder when it's starting (it doesn't have to be near there for the truck to stay running). just cut away the protective rubber on one of your old keys, and it will expose a hard plastic casing, the chip is just held in the plastic casing.

you could always get a bypass kit dis *or other co* thats made to bypass the imobilizer for remote starts and wire it on at all times so you can cut any key you want....

This article brough up a nice point that there may be some kinda back door bypass to the coded keys http://www.wired.com/wired/archive/14.08/carkey_pr.html Not really what your looking for but interesting none the less

Here is a link to the one I'm going to get for my '06 Tacoma ( http://www.toyotanation.com/forum/t112356.html ) And this is one I'm going to try and make work with my CBR F4i ( http://www.toyotanation.com/forum/t147654.html ). I can't wait to get 'em and get 'em working. I'll do photos and a write up when I'm done.

I'm going to get the whole alarm kit so the controls in the switchblade key will use it's own electronics to make things work.

Photos of Immobilizer

I just got my truck today and I can finally cut a key open and see what the Immobilizer looks like. Here is the key being cut open.

Here the rubber is removed. You can see the Immobilizer peeking out on the right.

Here the plastic is being broken away and the Immobilizer is out.

Here it is completely apart.

Now I have to wait for the Switchblade key to arrive and then I will cut the key and install it and the Immobilizer into the new Switchblade FOB. I can't wait to see how it works. I'll post
pics as soon as I get it working.
John

Oh, I forgot to mention, I tried using the key with the Immobilizer about 6 inches away from the key and
it did NOT work. I tried again with the Immobilizer half a cm away from the key and it DID work. So it looks
like slow231 was right and the Immobilizer does not have to be touching the key to work. Yeah!

Absolutely. I read somewhere that there are two very small screws that hold the key in place. I have not been able to confirm this yet though. As soon as I get it I'll let ya know.

Ok, I got the Switchblade key with the TRD logo on it. It's great! Works like a charm. I took the blank out of the fob with one small screw and took it to get cut. I then took the switchblade fob apart and glued the Immobilizer inside towards the key end. I put it all together and tried it out. Snickt... out comes the key. Into the ignition, turn and the engine starts. Whaahoooo. The Immobilizer is definately close enough for it to be recognized by the truck. Awesome. I've got the Autodoodad key and alarm comming soon. I'm going to switch the Immobilizer into it and hook up the alarm. The TRD logo switchblade key I'm going to use a dremel to cut and shape my CBR 600 F4i key and install it. Here are some photos of the TRD fob apart and a close up of the part of the key that goes into the switchblade.

I've got an Autodoodad switchblade key fob on the way so I used this TRD switchblade key fob for my CBRF4i. I had to use a dremel and cut and shape the key to get it to fit. Amazingly it worked. Here are the photos.
