i'm currently looking at buying a new tacoma, the DC SB TRD OR 4x4. long story short, here's my situation. the dealer is unable to find any trucks i want with the JBL option, if at all. they claim that if i want the truck with the JBL system, i'll have to order one from scratch to come from the factory. that's fine, but he says i'm looking at up to 3 months for shipment. he qualifies this by telling me, "hey, it'll be the only one like it and it'll be everything you want off the showroom floor". granted, i like the sound of that, but 3 months of waiting sucks for a stereo. why toyota dosen't install options at the dealer is beyond me. i'm 28 yrs old, i've owned my fair share of vehicles and i've been around the block in modifying them, but this stands to be my first toyota. the dealer turned around and told me that "they" see you coming, and if you order the stock sucky system and take the truck to the local stereo shop, it's a huge pain in the rear to put aftermarket systems in due to wiring, amp/speaker locations, etc. is this true? you guys are the only ones i know to ask. i mean, why wait 3 months for a truck because it has everything but the stereo when i can get aftermarket stuff the next day?
anything i need to look at, pros-cons, on buying a new tacoma? options not worth it, can't live without? thanks guys
It's definately not worth the 3 month wait. I have the stock system and its not that bad. People say putting in a new headunit makes a huge difference. The dealer is just saying all the bs to get you to pay more for it. I say get a Tacoma whichever trim you like (TRD,sr5,sport) all those and just upgrade the audio later. Im sure if it were that difficult to install a new system everyone would be complaining about it right about now. Make sure you get the V6 engine though. You'll never wanna even consider the 4cyl.
haha, i just searched around and found a few threads trashing the JBL. sorry about the "newb" post before you search. you'd think i didn't have 6,000+ posts on another board.
so i'm guessing i should just order the truck and install my own sound system. i already have half of the components i need, i might as well.
I wouldn't worry about the stereo- I've read lots of posts about guys putting in better head units---And I beleive its better not to have the JBL.....Try searching for"eclipse" and you'll find some posts about it.
07's are around the corner...by late Sept... Might want to wait to see what optins or diff colors may be available?? I'm not in a hurry and that's what I'm waiting for
I have the JBL, and was lucky enough to find one in a trim package I liked. If the JBL is what you really want, then wait. I've been happy with my JBL. While it doesn't thump as hard as previous aftermarkets I've had, it has a lot more bass than most stock stereos that I've heard. I've had someone tell me the sound quality of my JBL is better than what they had in their BMW 5 series.
Price wise, you will probably be able to find something and have it installed that sounds as good or better for around the price of the JBL.. but it's nice just having something that fits the look of the dash, and isn't a slouch when it comes to sound quality.
Crimony. 3 months?! Come out to Colorado where what you're looking for grows on trees by the thousands. I have the JBL option (and like it), and hardly any of the 30 Tacomas on that dealer's lot came without the JBL stereo.
If you have to wait that long and aren't interested in the '07s, then consider putting in an aftermarket system. There are a few great examples that have been posted in this forum (broken record: "do a search!").
Good luck with your purchase decision!

at this point, i'm content to wait on the 07's but a dealer getting rid of an 06 cheap would be nice too. i live in metro atlanta...muahahaha! they don't grow on trees around here.
I have my entire sound system running off my stock headunit (NON-JBL).
I have stock speakers and a Diamond Audio amp pushing a 10" sub in the storage compartment. Sounds amazing. Everyone always asks me if I have aftermarket speakers, I say "NO"!
I just adjusted the headunit EQ and listen to high quality music.
My truck looks plain as hell in the interior, but when you turn up the radio it sounds sweet.
There is nothing that makes it harder to install an after market system in a Tacoma. It's just like every other car/truck you've owned in that regard. Also, keep in mind you could wait longer then 3 months. My special order took also 7 months to come in.

The service dept. at the dealer is a joke! They only do minor repairs and lubes. They are NOT real machanics! They are guys who took some classes and have some hands on experience. But I would not consider them serious machanics. Thier bread and butter is parts replacement! Don't get me wrong? You may find a good one here or there, but for the most part I would not let them do major repairs. Much less install a stereo. Buy the truck; and have a good aftermarket system installed, at a real stereo shop!
