OT: Remembrance/Vetrans Day

In both the US and Canada today is the day we give thanks, so let us not forget to remember and give thanks to those who gave their lives fighting for our freedom.

Flanders Fields by:
Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae, MD (1872-1918)
Canadian Army

IN FLANDERS FIELDS the poppies blow
Between the crosses row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.

USA

I am not a veteran. My father was a veteran. He served in the Army during WWII. Among other things, he ended up a forward observer for the 106th. Infantry Division. 2/3rds of the Division were killed or captured in the Battle of the Bulge. He was lucky, he only stepped on an anti-personel land mine and was sent home. Half of his left foot was blown off. He received a medical discharge in 1947 after recognition that he could not be any more rehabilitated.

He attended college on the GI Bill and graduated with a civil engineering degree from Cal Berkeley in 1950. He designed sewage treatment plants and pioneered "pond filtration systems" He was one of the first environmental engineers. His mind was opened to the totality of the world and he prospered. He raced Porsches, and despite the fact that the manufacturers of his car were the same ones that designed and made the mine that almost killed him, he exercised forgiveness. He traveled to the U.S.S.R and the 'stans in the 50's and J. Edgar Hoover and the FBI opened a file on him. He was a patriot and taught me the meaning of freedom. He would have hated the movie Borat.

He died 14 months ago. He believed that the war in Iraq was fought under false pretences. He was right.

RIP Dad, I love you.
