I bought a tonneu cover for my '06 Super White Taco but it is proving to be impracticle. I can't get enough gear in the back, and we keep knocking the bows out when we load it. Heaven forbid you have to unsnap it when the sun isn't beating down on it...good luck getting it snaped back on, even with the winter setting! And you know that whatever you need first will be up against the cab under the cover. Even my wife says that she likes the look of the cover but a cap would be more practicle. I hate to get away from the truck look and into the SUV look. I have had truck/caps before, but at least I could camp in it, you'd have to be a dwarf to sleep in this one, the problem is practically in loading and hauling.
Found this site that has truck tents and soft folding truck caps. Don't camp much so I don't know how these would work out for you. Just a thought and some ideas you may not have thought about.
I did concider the folding cover..they are pretty sweet. The problem is packing area, I need the height as well as the bed dimentions. Maybe I just have too much crap! I don't haul tall stuff other than lawn mowers, I just need the square area. A cap would double my hauling space and greatly improve accessability to my crap. BUT...do I sacrifice good looks? I mean the truck, not me....LOL
I got a new Double Cab Prerunner. My friend tried to talk me into a long bed like his but he cannot fit it into his garage and walk around it. So I bought the short bed cause I don't want mine to live out in the elements. I thought about getting a bed cover but now I think it's best to not have anything at all. All the stuff that I carry that can't be outside fits rather well inside with the back seat folded down.
Folding covers are 10x better than any other option. Regular tonneau covers suck because you can't put anything tall in the bed and they are in the way when they are open.
Rolling covers suck because they are slower to open than folding covers and you have to open them all the way to get to stuff in the front. Also rolling covers waste more space in the bed of your truck especially on the sides where the hardware goes. also I think most rolling covers make the Toyota track system not work. They suck.
Campershells are great if you really need one, but they will make your mpg's worse, they will make your car more top heaving so worse cornering performance, worse braking performance, they will make your car look like grandpa's, and they are a total pain the ass to get stuff in and out of, prepare for crawling on all fours and sore knees. Also they limit the vertical height of your cargo, unlike folding covers and rolling covers. You cannot fit a couch or lazy boy or big screen tv in a truck with a campershell.
I have a are topper on my 02 dbkl cab and I aint no grandad .It comes in handy and I have had nothing but good comments on the way it looks.I also like the folding cover.Till I bought the 06 I just took it off to haul something taller than the camper shell or hooked up my trailer if the mood struck me.What it comes down to is can you get what you need to haul in it.The only gripe I have about the topper is backing a trailer up can sometimes be a pain,Depends on how wide the trailer is.The cover is nice but if it wont fit underneath it and its pouring down rain on your trip your not going to be to pleased with it.I also considered a camback canvas topper but no security at all and the price was a little too high.I was a little scared it might get ripped off along with what I would carry in it.As far as crawling into it.You just get one with side access opening windows. They open from the outside just like the rear window.Money well spent even thou a carpeted bed floor will help.Toppers are not cheap but neither is spending 500 bucks just to find out it dosent fit your needs. Oh well time for me to hit the sack. Some of us have to get up and go to work.Take it easy.
Currentsupply, do you have the BakFlip one? That's the one I have and it's pissing me off with all the rain we've had the last few months. I still haven't been able to make the damn thing keep out water. I'm tired of fucking with it so I'm actually looking for a different one.... Back to the same search I did 4 or 5 months ago... *sigh*
I was actually thinking about a cap since PB's looks so good on his... lol And the wife wants to go camping next summer since we both have weekend off now. But, like the comments above it limits what I can carry. I'm still fixing up our house so who knows what I'll have to bring home next. A roof rack on the cab and cap would come in handy, but I'd have to have opening side windows so I don't have to crawl in to grab things.
I hated this decision the first time I had to do it....

I have the fold a cover, it barely leaks at all. I usally go to this hands free car wash that uses high pressure spray before they wash my car, and there is usually like a teaspoon of water inside afterwords. It's coming from the front corner, but it's not even worth worrying about. I could just put some more black rubber weather stripping hidden under there to fix it, but it's so little water it's not worth it.

Thanks! Good to know. I have enough leaking in to spread across the entire rubber mat. Once it does that it's hard for me to pinpoint the problem. I've added weather stripping, and sealed up this and that. I'm tired of having stuff get wet too.

Swapping out my tonneau for a camper shell was one of the best things I have done. You can haul so much more stuff and keep it secure and dry. But as far as tonneaus go, the Lorado was really nice.
Tiger. Is that a jack to lift the truck or what is that? (on the second image)
Yeah. It's a Hi-Lift jack. I need to get the winch kit for it so it's more useful. Can't do much with it at the moment without my sliders either, but it's there "just in case". lol
PB, does that cap have lights in it and can you open the side windows? Really thinking I might get something like that. I'm afraid to drop another $600 on another folding cover. Some of the rubber parts on my current one just don't seem to hold up. They crack, or peel up due to the bending caused by opening the cover. Rolling covers look nice, but I'd have to relocate the jack.
