i have a nasty ding in my rear bumper from about two months ago. a guy with an f250 backed into me and dinged my bumper with his trailer ball as i was walking out of Lowe's. well, i've been putting off fixing it, and it's like 350$ for a new bumper, so today i tried to take it off to hammer it out with a hammer and a 2x4. i think the black clips that hold the composite bumper covering on could not be more inconveniently placed. has anyone removed their rear bumper? and if so, do you have a service manual/guide? how did you get the clips up through the chrome to take off the composite? by the license plate and such). this is the only visual cosmetic damage my truck has (aside from a dime sized ding in the tailgate) and i want to hammer it out this weekend. thanks guys.
also, if anyone has a chrome bumper for sale for cheap, let me know.
1) Remove license plate, disconnect and remove lights. Don't forget the little orange insert for the light housing screw (if you are swapping bumpers). Use a pair of pliers on these from the back side.
2) Pry open the square covers over the "push-in"-type clips in the lower pad/lower step, and use the tool of your choice to pry up the 2 clips. The square covers pry/flip to the outside.
3) Remove the 2 bolts (IIRC 10mm) on the lower section (underneath) of the lower pad/lower step. Remove lower pad. This reveals 2 (IIRC 14mm bolts)
4) Remove the spare tire. It is worth the effort in the long run. Stay under the truck.
5) Using a pair of needle-nose pliers, compress the clips holding the upper pad to the bumper and push them upwards. Once all the clips are free, while you are down there, remove the (IIRC 4 10mm) bolts that hold the bottom of the bumper to the frame.
6) Get up. Remove the upper cap from the bumper. It should be loose, but if not, just give it a quick pull at the clip points. This will reveal 4 (IIRC 14mm) bolts securing the top of the bumper to the frame.
7) remove the 6 14mm bolts (the ones under both caps) holding the bumper to the frame. Pull bumper out towards you to remove.
8) Once the bumper is free, remove the corner braces/brackets and covers/caps.
9) Reinstall in reverse order.

It's not too bad. I think I could have mine off in about 10 minutes. I backed into a light pole at Taco bell and dinged my color matched silver streak mica bumper a month after i bought my truck. I was so pissed at myself, but I went ahead and bought a new Chrome bumper to replace it. Two months after that i was driving in the mud in my new neighbor hood and backed into a 2x4 stuck in the mud in the tall grass. And dinged my new bumper in the exact same spot. Again, very pissed at myself.
So I took it off again and massaged it out with a few C clamps and some soft wood. it came out pretty well, but I pretty much decided that it is destiny that i have a small dent in my bumper. After all, it is a truck.

how did you go about getting it out with the C clamps? i was just going to hammer it out with a 2x4 and a hammer.
I just used a giant c clamp and a peice of wood on both sides of the bumper so it wouldn't scratch it or leave a circular impression. I had a pretty clean vertical dent and I just worked my way up the crease. It does not look perfect, but nobody notices it until I point it out.
You can kinda see the after in this pic. Just look at where the reflection of the ground takes a dip on the left side
I hate people that drive off. I dove a county parks truck into some Aholes 3 foot ball hitch extension, I just crincled the plate on mytruck though. Of course I did not damage that guys truck Ever walk into a hitch ? Ouch!
Good luck with the dent though.

i've talked to two dent removal guys around here about my tailgate, and both were complete jerks. one lectured me about how intricate his work was and that i couldn't expect him to be done in three days, but it would cost 110$, and the other thought i was stupid for denting my tailgate, and wanted to charge me 90$.
