Who said I was going to use this oil for MY truck?
The Platinum is for my fiance's Ford POS. I was waiting for a sale like this. No way was I spending $5+ per quart on synthetic for her car. I just cleaned out the engine with Auto-Rx and it runs better than ever (it's a Ford so don't read to much into it). Now I want to extend the OCI to 6 months, which with her driving, is right around 5k.
I am still undecided on the Q in my Tacoma. For that price, if I don't like it, I'll change it out.
Yes, Mobil1 has gone from PAO to hydrocracked base stock. Even worse they aren't coming clean about it. So they are getting Group IV money for Group III oil. Pennzoil Platinum was designed using EOP (Group V) but it proved to be too expensive to produce so they went to hydrocracked as well. I believe the switch over date was last year around the beginning of November, 2005. Some of this clearance oil may be Group V. Like I said, it's on par with Mobil1 so why not pay half the price while the gettin is good?

Hey Boone do you have any info on German made 5W-30. I was at Parts Source the other day with a buddy, I went to show him that he needs to look for 0W-30 with the "made in germany" on the back. I had picked up a bottle of 5w-30 to show him and compare the two and it also said made in germany. I was like hmmmm interesting. Is this new news old news, what's the scoop? I had thought only the 0w-30 we got was german made? I'm confused to say the least.

I have no idea. I've never heard that before.
If you have a chance, go back and get a couple pics of it. One of the front, one of the back and one of the bottom code.
Either it's a) really, really old b) it's a mistake c) it's a Canadian thing since most Syntec is packaged in NJ, maybe they started importing it to Canada straight from Deutschland or d) it's something new however just because it's "Made in Germany" doesn't mean that it is a true group IV synthetic like the 0W-30, it could be group III like the rest of the Syntec line. In which case it's not a bad oil, it's just overpriced IMO.
Like I said, pictures would be very, very much appreciated.

I'll see what I can do. The other strange thing was they had it in 4.4 liter big bottles as well, again with made in germany on the back. The big bottles were a newer style bottle it had two handles one at the bottom and one at the top. Kinda like the Euro spec bottles look but with a typical spout. I'll see if I can get a pic. I'm sure to get some stares, talking pics of bottled oil in the store.
Hmm... everyday price? That's news to me. I tend to avoid Walmart if I can.
Last I checked $2.89 ($5.78/2) is less than $2.99.
If that really is the case, why the hell would anyone use Mobil1 anymore? Or do people just like paying twice as much for the same product?
It's like buying all your aftermarket parts from the dealer at MSRP without getting them to price match any internet prices.
Boone I know you are the oil guy. What do you think of Pennzoil Platinum?
I have always used dino oil. I just can not pay or will not pay $6 a qt. for oil.
I change oil every 3k if i go with Pennzoil Platinum i would move to 5K.
Dino is close to $2 and Penn is $3 going from changing at 3K to 5K.
It look like it would cost about the same.

So what do you think of Pennzoil Platinum?
For $2.89 a quart this is THE BEST deal out there. It's a good oil anyway. For sub-$3 it's a GREAT buy.
Would I pay the same price for PP as I would for Amsoil, Redline or German Castrol? Hell no.
You are approaching or matching some good dino oil prices with this sale.
If I were you, I'd buy a case or two or three of some Platinum 5W-30. That's my personal opinion.
Think of it this way. If Mobil1 was on sale for $2.89, people would be creaming their pants. Pennzoil just never gained the same respect, I guess, because their previous "synthetic" was garbage. When Shell took over Pennzoil/Quaker State they developed this Platinum product using advanced base oils. Now they've gone back (unfortunately but at least made it public knowledge) to what just about everyone else uses for base oil, still good but get it as cheaply as you can. For anyone that has said "I would use synthetic but it's too expensive", this is your chance.
People currently using Mobil1, it's time to get off their jock. THEY ARE RIPPING YOU OFF!
big chris, BUY IT NOW. You've got 10 days left...

My lord boone...how did you learn so much about oil?
Thanks for the tip. My truck is due for an oil change as well. But I'm in Ohio until Friday. Then I'll be home and will have to get cracking as there will only be 7 days left.
