I picked up a sliver mica regular cab auto Tacoma last night with 5 mile son the odometer! So for I am very pleased it is much nicer than I expected a base model truck to be. My question is about maintainance. The schedule that came with the truck shows the first oil change at 5k miles. Is that right????? I would have figured being a new engine it would need to be changed sooner during break in. Maybe I am wrong and just used to old school engines. What mileage did you guys do your first oil change at?
When I bought my truck, I specifically asked the dealer about this, and the first oil change can be at the specified millage and do no harm to the engine. You may here differently in this post, but that is what my dealer told me. I change my oil every 3k, the first was at just over 3k. second at 6. no issues. Dealer does it for free with the service agreement I got.

Haha, no issues. I should hope not at 6000 miles.
Any "issues" stemming from how you broke-in your truck won't reveal themselves until waaaay down the road. The term "break-in" mainly concerns your oil seals. Depending on the way in which your seals seat will usually result in oil leaks, burning oil and ultimately engine failure later in the engine's life.
There are a million schools of thought on the situation. You can formulate your own opinion very easily.
There are break-in metals in you first run of engine oil, it's common sense. To me, letting those float around for 5k miles while you cycle your engine (hot and cold) and seat the oil seals doesn't make much sense. The more metal particles in your oil, the more wear you are subjecting your engine towards.
I've posted this before but this is my suggestion: change out the factory fill at 1000 miles. Replace with a new filter and mineral (dino) oil and run 4k miles. At 5k, replace with whatever you feel comfortable with, either synthetic or dino, and change every 5k miles from there. At least until the warranty is up.
Changing your oil every 3k miles is a waste of time and money no matter what you're using. Follow Toyota's maintenance intervals.

Ok I was just wondering this being my first Brand New vehicle I want to follow the best maintainance schedule possible. 5K miles seems like a long time for break in oil I look at more like boone just posted above but then again I am uses to building SBF engines.. What is the factory fill on the 2.7 5w-30 dino oil? Also I am more than capable of changing my own oil, but is it in my best interest to take it to the dealer every 5K and let them do it so that I get my service schedule book stamped? I figure if you ever have a problem it might look better to have documented deale oil changes , am I wrong in thinking this? Also what does the dealer normally chare for the scheduled service's at 5K ???
I had my oil changed the first time around 1600 miles. It only cost $20 so I figured why not? Then again at my 5000 mile checkup. The cost for that was $40 for oil change/tire rotation/fluids and inspected stuff. I paid enough for my truck that I'm not going to skimp on $20 for an oil change.

I'm actually on my way over to the dealer in a minute to get mine back from the first change. When I bought it they gave me a card for a free '1,000 mile service', which I just rolled into this weekend, so I dropped it off this morning.
That's probably what I will do then just change it around 500-600 with a good dino oil then change to synth around 5K. Pretty much any high quality 5w-20 should be fine right?
Boone, I don't pay for my oil changes right now, Toyota does. I will go to 5k oil changes once I have to do them myself next may. And like I said, there are alot of opinions on this subject. I went with what the dealer said, which is covered under warranty. Shape, the dealer has yet to actually stamp my service book, even though I left it for them. I just write down the date/time and keep the receipt from the service and file it. Carefull asking which oil to use, you might start a war :p
Do whatt you feel is rite for you. when i changed mine at 1500 miles, it still had a long ways to go, however, it made me feel better..i do alot of stopping and starting around town so my castrol comes out at 3ooo. this works for me, my engines usually get better with time..congratulations, youre gonna love this truck
