The shifter release is controlled electronically when the key is on and the brake pedal is pressed. You can't shift from park by simply unlocking the steering wheel and applying the brake. That being said I would start checking fuses. My battery died and I could not get my truck out of park without prying out the little piece by the shifter and depressing it.
Yeah, it feels like it's just stayng locked. will check fuses...... the steering is loose, tried "nudging" the vehicle no luck...... it's raining quite a bit, might that have an impact?
you have deffinately blown a fuse. Just last week I was driving my moms 04 sienna and same thing was happening. Trucks turns on, but i cant shift into gear. The radio, ac, and power outlets were not working. had it taken to the dealer on a flatbed and they said it was because of blown fuse.

Yeah, Just found the info on the overide. going to the dealer in a week. Anyone know which fuse it may be, or what it's called? Everything else works fine thought.... My taco was purchased in canada if there is a difference...
I know when at the boat ramp I always unplugg the trailer harness. I've seen the water pop the fuse on other toyotas and get stuck on the ramp. Not sure which fuse, brake/tailamp/selector maybe, just have to look to see
Shift Lock is on page 238 of the electrical service manual, see the sticky above
Looks like the following fuses play in.
10A IG1
7.5A ACC
10A Stop
10A IG1 No. 2
The thing is driven off the Shift Lock ECU, so again, can't tell exactly which fuse does what.
Didn't someone post early about a mechanical bind due to parking on a hill with a load of wood in the truck? Maybe it wasn't a fuse, but the load or the slope?

I ran into that right after I got my truck. I switched toppers, and somehow the fuse to the tail lights got blown. The dealership was going to do a whole inspection on it, which would have cost me $$ if it wasn't their fault, so I took it back to the topper installer and we looked around until we found the short. We realized it was the brakes because all the lights were out.
You can hit the release button and drive it as much as you need to until you find it, but I'd recommend finding the cause ASAP.

When i got my truck rust proofed, they removed the tail lights to get access. By doing so, the wire that went to my topper was pulled back and stripped ever so slightly, enough to short out the stop cicruit. Easy fix but a pain to find.
Props to Krown rust proofing on queensdale, in Ottawa. When i went back to their shop, he helped me find the problem, no charge. Wasnt totally his fault as the wire should have been routed better. Great service!
Thanks for all the info. the overide info was a lifesaver!
