I read somewhere and was told by a couple people that its where the machinery is used to hoist it from the factory, but is conveniently a nice set of storage pockets.

My neighbor was a designer for the Mexico plant that builds the beds for our trucks. I asked him about it. It's just for storage. Not assembly.

Storage for what exactly? The only thing I find myself using it for is tossing in bolts, screws, wrenches, etc when I'm working in the bed so they don't roll away.

I know you have a good use for them PB with your lights. I might do that sometime. They just seem too small to be useful for much. hmmmm.... maybe my rachet straps. lol instead if just tossed in the back

DO NOT and I repeat DO NOT store any type of strap or other cloth type item in the compartments with the doors! I did that and one day I went to use a strap and noticed a funky smell. The straps smelled like mildew where moisture had gotten into the compartments and never totally dried out. That was some seriously rancid shit.

At some point I might try to waterproof those damn things. I think I might have been better off if they weren't there to start with.

Not the ones with the doors. The openings closer to the cab. The ones that are open all the time.

I know what you mean about the ones with doors tho. I've put stuff in there and went offroad, then opened them up only to see dirt and mud everywhere. It's amazing how much crap comes up throught the drain holes.

As for water proofing, maybe you could just fill the holes at the back and put some rubber weather stripping allong the door. Might not be water tight, but might be enough to keep out rain and splashes from the tires. I might look at that myself. lol

Hmm.
I've kept my nylong binding straps and a polyester rope in the boxes almost since day one (Jan2005 purchase) and haven't experienced the odor prblm. They do get wet, but have never smelled.

Same here. Don't have a problem with my straps, though there is mud in there from my last mudding excursion
