I know it is not out in the states yet, but I heard this weekend Toyota is coming out with a diesel/biodiesel Tacoma for 2008 for US use. Does anyone know anything about that?
OF course right now, I am not seeing much of the new diesel fuel (most tanks say not for 2007 and later vehicles) but biodiesel makes for some good alternatives. Not sure how clean it would run though.
I guess it would have to be a turbo diesel - I had an old Volvo diesel years ago and going over the mountains - well I was in the right lane climbinb up with the big rigs.
one diesel is enough for me, actually other than my dmax, my ford new holland is diesel also..they cost big bucks, and the way theyre playing with diesel in this country..you may never get the roi..i like my smooth powerful 4.0..yahooooooooo
ps kind of lost it there
Never have been a fan of diesel. They have thier place in the auto world, just not in mine. I don't like the noise they make or the smell. I too am quite happy with my 4.0.
I did see a Duramax recently that was pretty quiet and I was pleasantly surprised by it.

you are thinking of diesels of the past
mercedes has a diesel engine in a new sport coupe that will out perform their own gas V8 engine, hands down, off the line and in the long haul
diesel tech has come a long way in the past 5 years and is going to get much better
If Toyota wanted to they could offer us the 3.0 Litre Turbo Diesel that is offered in the Hilux truck that is sold everywhere else in the world. It should fit in the Tacoma because the Hilux is also offered with our 4.0 V6 in some countries.

i agree here. i would like to see a diesel in the tacoma, even i probably wouldn't buy it cuz i'm happy with my current tacoma
still would be nice to see though
I would trade up for it. I think this is the only way I would get rid of my Tacoma. The down fall of it all would the the Tire Pressure Monitoring System. Thats why I like my 05 so much

One reason we don't use Diesel so much here in the US is we are still using "dirty" Diesel while most european countries are using a cleaner Diesel with 90% of the sulphur removed and some other additives. I do believe the US is starting to move over to the clean diesel at this moment in time.

Yup, all the diesel now is low sulfur, which is bad for older diesel cars that were programmed for the higher sulfur fuel. It even mentions at diesel pumps that it can cause damage to cars.

It might take me five minutes to make the decision.
Considering how many miles (kms) I drive each year. (101000 kms in just over 14 months) How much towing I do (5000 lb trailer 650 kms a week minimum) plus trips with my travel trailer. How much equipment and cargo I carry I have no Idea what it weighs but at least 1000 lbs of people and cargo every day of the week I add to that when required. How long I want my truck to last. (6 to 10 years) I would be very foolish not to get a Diesel taco the moment they come on the market.
I'd actually like to see a diesel electric Hybrid that can double as a diesel generator at job sites, camp sites and just doing work around the yard or at the inlaws farm. It would be great for adding on board compressor and welding equipment on a temporary basis regular portable equipment could be used then taken to indoor job sites.
The torque for towing, climbing hills, even off road it would be great.
The complaints about smell are a bit silly in my opinion. Wear gloves when fueling, don't hang out near your tail pipe. Gas doesn't smell great either. I don't hang out near the exaust pipe now.
The noise isn't too bad really. The taco needs better insulation though for an oil burner. Its noisy now with the gas.
Diesel is available widely in my area.
The initial cost is the only problem along with the new regulations in the USA, they will surely affect diesels in Canada too.
New trucks will have some sort of particulate filter added (more parts more cost) this requires some extra servicing. and they will be engineered to run on lower sulpher diesel.
I also have a minor concern about gelling in extreme cold temps. I hear that mercedes and dodge have a way around cold starts for their diesels, but I don't know much about how it works.
Diesels need more maintenance too. I do one oil change a month now, and about two tune ups a year. A few more fuel filters is ok with me. Which reminds me, I hope they get the diesel fuel filter out of the tank...(why did they do this with the gas one?).....what a silly idea that was Toyota. Thankfully we now live in a world with ultra pure gas, no condensation or water or dirt ever at any filling station. I've been lucky so far though, in about 200 fillups with the Taco I haven't had to (or been able to) change the fuel filter.
Sorry I'm off topic.
I say yes to a diesel in the tacoma, also in the tundra and the sequoia and in the 4 runner just to get started. Toyota has a great track record overseas with this. Diesel is becomming cleaner in north america. I think its time has come. It has great power, great economy and for those who want it the potential for great performance.
I don't know about everyone else here, but I am NOT interested in towing 17,000lbs on a regular basis. What I really want is a capable truck that can ocassionally tow 6000-8000lbs and will get 25 MPG while I'm not towing. Ford, GM, and Dodge have gotten into a Torque and Towing Capacity race with their diesels, at the cost of fuel economy. Ford has plans to come out with a small displacement (4.5L, Rover based) diesel for their F-150 that should get decent MPG, and I've been dreaming of a diesel Tacoma, but this is the first that I've heard of any plans for Toyota's 2008 model year.
The only concern that I have was mentioned above, the high price of diesel fuel. I'd like to think that it is going to come down, but I read an article a few months ago that said that the oil industry has repriced their fuels based on energy content. So even though diesel is cheaper to refine (compared to gasoline), it has a higher energy content, and will be priced higher accordingly, which is BS! If the Tacoma diesel "option" is reasonably priced, it still might be worth it, if it is a $5000 option like on the Dodge, that $5000 would sure buy a lot of gasoline over the life of the truck.

I agree...I think paying 5 grand for a disel i obsurd...WTF are GM, Dodge, and Ford thinking? I mean, if you keep the truck over its ENTIRE lifetime to 300k miles, assuming it didn't blow a gasket or what not, then it would pay for itself, but not over 100k miles...I like the fact that Mercedes, as highly priced as they are, only has a $800 premium on their 3.0L Blutec disel.
