I am towing a camper and am wondering what the best ways to increase horsepower and torque out of my 4.0 V-6 auto.
I'm with you on this one...I think the best way to get more horsepower and torque out of our Tacoma's is to start petitioning Toyota to offer the Tacoma with an optional V-8. I would trade mine in tomorrow.

Why don't you trade it in for a Tundra if you want a V8?
I know the 245(2005) and 236(2006/07) are the numbers on the window sticker, but I didn't think they were rating at the wheel.
You are correct sir. Those ratings (245 hp-2005, 236 hp-2006/07), are hp measured at the crank, and according to URD, the hp at the rear wheels is 209 on thier Xrunner.

Thats on a X-Runner with and Manual Transmission and 2WD. On a Auto Transmission and 4WD like on my truck it's prolly more like 190 - 195 RWHP. Unfortunatly thats one of the downfalls of having an Auto is less power gets to the rear wheels

You are also correct sir. According to TN member Calypson, rwhp on his 4wd before any engine/exhaust mods was 189. But he had 33" tires on it, I don't know if that would affect hp/torque. Either way my point was that rwhp, and what's measured at the crank are two different numbers. But my first post has been edited for clarification.

OK, anyway, back on topic. I, too am interested in some HP gains, but the vast majority of us aren't ready to blow $5K on a blower. I was able to get another 20-25 HP on my 97 Dakota through an exhaust ($325), intake ($50) and roller rockers ($150). I'm wondering if such gains are even possible on an engine like the Taco's 4.0? It's pretty highly tuned already from what I've read. I'm interested in URD's fuel/air mixture device, but I've not seen enough reviews to make a decision. Headers would be good, but from what I hear, the JBAs are hit or miss on fit/finish. Still waiting on the URD CAI.
It'll be fun to see what folks come up with for this motor in the future...
Best mods for the price, HP, and MPG's would be intake, and exhuast????
Any input on this???
I think the majority are looking based on price, ease of installation, and gain in horse power/torque and mpg's......Maybe asking a lot, but that is what I am looking for.
I've heard of problems with the intakes having a negative affecto on the Mass Air Flow Sensor. Anyone have this problem?
