with all this talk about making your taco quieter has anyone measured the difference with a db meter? I bought a meter from radio shack and got 72-73 on c-weighting and 87-89 on a-weighting. This was all done at 70mph on a decent freeway. I know this is not a pro-meter but it gives me a baseline. Im planning on useing this to tell how much louder my cab get with a 9by11by22 inch magnaflow muffler. Also I am planning on doing the rear of the cab with some sort of dynamatt style stuff.
Good idea. I have one of those I bought when I was setting up my home theater. Using it in the truck would be a neat idea as I am going to be doing the doors in my truck also. Time to go dig that bad boy out and see what I get in my truck.
Did you get the analog or digital model. Mine is the digital model. I think C-weighted and slow response would be the way to measure, correct?

I just checked mine at fast idle in the driveway on a cold start idling around 1300 rpm, and got around 70 db, slow and c-weighted.

Just came in from some Black Friday shopping at Sears. On my way back the truck was around 75-80 db running 60 MPH on the same settings as before.

I'll have to break out my Rat Shack meter later to test mine. Interesting idea. I always think about taking it to the movie thearter, but forget all the time. After measuring the db's in the truck, I'll just leave it in the glove box for the next time I go to the movies.

I've thought my truck was pretty loud for a "modern" vehicle. Sounds over 80db for extended periods can cause permanent hearing damage...so if our trucks are pushing 80db at 60mph, and I know at 70mph it's significantly louder than it is at 60, plus having a radio on, I'm sure it's over 80db....and for a long road trip that probably isn't good.
I have the radio shack meter and on the back where the batteries go in it says cat. 88-2055
Yours is the same as mine I think. Look at your numbers again. I believe that is 33-2055, at least that is what mine says.
I don't place a whole lot of faith in this meter at lower db's. I can read the db's at lower levels on 60, 70, and 80 settings. On 60 it was around 69 db's. On 70 it was around 75-80 db. On 80 setting, it was around 75-80. That is why I chose to post 75-80 db. I think the truck is actually pretty quiet.

ok I just installed a 5 by 11 by 22inch magnaflow muffler and some quick numbers I got on the way home on the freeway at 75 was 73 db on the c weighting with slow funtion on. So the muffler increased the dbs by 1. I really like this muffler. The sound is deep and quiet. On the freeway you can bearly hear it only if you accererate. Around town is where you hear it as you use the gas more. Its a very classy style of noise. Deffintly not a high school kids type of anoying sound. It does not sound like a rice rocket at all, just a nice deep note.
