I was trying to buy "more truck" for less money by picking up an 05 or 06 Tacoma. I cannot believe what these trucks are going for! I actually believe I could buy my truck, drive it for 6 months and sell it without a loss!
To put it in perspective: I searched on Autotrader for a 2005, 2006 2WD PRERUNNER ACCESS CAB 4 CYLINDER 5 SPEED W/SR5 POWER PACKAGE. The best price I could find was $18,998.00 FIRM on an 06 truck with 5,000 miles and I didn't like the color. I was able to buy a 2007 for $550.00 more!! This is the exact same truck! Granted I got a good price from the dealer but even if I paid $21,000.00 I would still be crazy to pay 19K for a 2 year old truck with 5K on the clock! The good news is FANTASTIC RESALE! I can't believe how good resale on a Tacoma is, its almost unbelievable!
And this is what finally convinced my wife that I should get a new truck instead of a used one! lol
My 06 DC 4x4 TRD-OR was around $27,000 before taxes, etc. Kelly Blue Book was saying 05's with 15,000 miles were around $25,000! And that didn't even get down to comparing options to get an identical match to the one I ended up getting... We just saw an approximate 2g difference between used (and abused) and new and said F-that! Go new and have the whole warranty, no abuse, etc.
When I tried to refinance the truck through my credit union, my truck KBB'd at almost exactly what I owe. Very cool!

Not that I plan to rid myself of the Tacoma but I too was surprised at the resale. KBB shows $23K for my truck and thats not with all the options that came on it even. Thats about $3K more than I owe on it and about $3K less than I paid for it 2 years ago.

You can even look at the 2004's and you still aren't gonna come out too far ahead buying used. I tried, but the only $2k reduction, plus the larger cabin on the 06 made it a no brainer.

when i went out looking for another truck, i started looking at the 01-04 dcabs and the best price i could find was on an 03 with 60,000+ miles on it. the guy wanted 16,800. i ended up with my 07 for 18,100. i could probably sell it right now for 20k and make a little cash but then i would have to go deal with the dealer again.

All pretty good points - yes the Tacoma has insane resale value. Makes it hard to get one used for any deal at all. I did buy my '05 a year ago used. It was in almost perfect condition, had 8K miles on it. V6 4x4 auto access cab TRD sport - $24,750. Not much of a deal but I think the same truck new '06 would have been close to $$27 or $28. MAde the difference in me being able to buy it tho.
However I gotta say this. KBB is pretty damn INFLATED. I'm fairly certain the car industry as a whole has their grubby fingers all over KBB. I tend to look at as many sources as I can. I at least look at NADA (www.nada.com) value as it tends to be more realistic.
yep, i was looking to get a used Taco, but for one, there just werent many available, and two, the prices were barely higher than a new one. Plus if you're financing, you get a lower rate on a new one.
I got my 05 doublecab TRD Sport for $23000 with the premium 100,000 bumper to bumper warrenty. The guy would have knocked off another 1000 if I didn't want the warrenty. I'm happy with my used rtaco.
Am I the only one that thinks that KBB quotes are questionable at best? I mean sure it's a good general guideline but I feel it's a bit high of reality. Perhpas it's my part of the country (Arkansas) but then again KBB always asks for your zip code during quoting.
