WTF! I decided to start putting a higher octane gas into my 05' Sport DC a couple of months ago just for shits and giggles. Ever since I started doing so my engine light has been coming on and off for a couple of drive cycles at a time. There really is no rhyme or reason to it except that I noticed that it comes on more often when I'm under 1/4 tank or so but it's also come on after I've filled it as well. I make sure to tighten the cap well after every fill so I know that's not the issue. The truck is running fine if not better due to the high octane but I'm getting a little nervous as to what's up or if I should be concerned. I figure I'll switch back to regular octane just to see if it keeps happening but thought I'd pass it by you guys first. Anyone else experience this??
Flame away if this has already been discussed!!

it probably has nothing to do w/ the gas. could be a few things. but if i could make a guess i would say that there is a problem w/ your EVAP system, (maybe a bad gas cap) but who knows im just sitting at home here on my computer. i think Autozone scans vehicles for free?
Autozone heh...I'll have to check that out..Hope there is one in Maine! I gotta bring it into the dealer for the so-called 45,000 mile service and figured I'd have to pay the $75.00 charge for the scan. If it is only a bad gas cap I'll be psyched!! Thanks for the response.

Would a scan be covered under a power train warranty if it turns out to be a faulty gas cap??
Not sure if the gas cap is part of the powertrain warranty. Toyota doens't make the gas cap, they outsource, so it was likely only covered under the 36k B2B warranty. A scan, whatever the problem, should be covered. I could be wrong on the gas cap though, I know they have been considered emmission devices in which they would be covered under powertrain warranty.

Warranty coverage is not relevant to outsourcing. The marjority of parts are outsourced and mfr's run "assembly plants". Tires and Batteries have restricted warranties because of what they are, not who makes them. Many automotive transmissions are outsourced, for example.
That doesn't mean that the fuel cap is covered under powertrain, although,it is considered part of your emissions system, and is subject to the emissions component warranty. I don't recall offhand the length of that warranty, but it's in your booklet.

It is possible to read the check engine codes using the factory radio. The sequence escapes me right now, but I have done it.
The error codes would be displayed on the digital readout of the radio, and you could then narrow your fault origin.
I will try and search for the steps to perform this. Also a ScanGauge II has this built in.
I just checked my emission control warranty and it says it's good for for 8 years or 130,000 km. That's just a standard warranty no extended warranty purchase was made.
