I don't understand why they picked the Frontier over the Taco. It seems the Taco did a little better in most of the test's. Plus the Frontier is an ugly truck, and it sits way to low.

Yeah, this has been discussed. I don't like how they used a DC longbed in the test and the Sport package, compared to the short bed Frontier.

I think they were swayed by their own bias in looking for a more comfortable ride home on the highway after a long weekend in the desert.

So the Nissan is more plush like a car...and they think it is a better truck.

Tired of people looking for sedan features out of a truck...but thats just me...

Is it true then based on the article that theres not much of a off roading performance increase with the OR packages?

As long as you get 4x4 is there a huge reason to upgrade to the OR package? I dont want to hijack this thread but they said that there was not much difference.

Thanks

Based upon my simple, common knowledge, I'd say that is Bull Shit. Might not be a difference in ride quality (suspension), but it takes a real fool without any OR knowledge to say a locked rear diff shows little to no difference off-road than an open one. The guy who tells me that instantly loses credibility.

Just like the guy who picks a nissan over a yota for off road ability.

EDIT: Sorry, just re-read and saw he was comparing to a sport model with an LSD. My bad.

Based on your replies I guess he doesnt know what hes talking about.

I think the guy mainly writes reviews on cars and rarely does off roading. So since he doesnt have any real off roading experience, he doesnt really know what hes talking about and doesnt know how to properly test off roading trucks. While thats fine, he really shouldnt be writing truck/off roading reviews.

The thing is, since I dont know a whole lot about off roading, I might have used his review to buy the inferior nissan instead of the tacoma.

It's all subjective man, don't put too much weight on what anyone says really. On paper the capabilities are near identical in every way. The Tacoma achieves notably better mpg in practice, although they have the same rating on the sticker. The Tacoma will probably have higher resale if previous years are any indicator. Other than that it's really just a choice. I chose the Tacoma because the Frontier is ugly, the interior felt like everything was in the wrong place (totally subjective points - also note the wife didn't like the hard materials of the fronty interior,) and because the extended is much smaller than the Tacoma extended cab - so for the space I wanted I would've had to get the crew cab fronty, and I don't like crew cabs. Plus they didn't have it with a long bed. Honestly if they did have the crew cab with the long bed, I probably would've gotten it instead. That's only because my local Nissan dealer is awesome, and the local Toyota dealer sucks ass.

I read somewhere reliability of the Tacoma is over 50 percent higher than the Nissan. I owned a G35 Infiniti and build quality was excellent. Bottom line is NOTHING beats TOYOTA in terms of build quality, even HONDA. If Toyota starts building Jetskis I will probably sell my F12 and buy one! Just be grateful you don't own any US Vehicles, my fist and LAST US built car I owned in 25 ears was the new Mustang GT Convertible. It was TOWED IN at 41 miles. Typical US car quality, and now the "Big 3" have the nerve to actually complain to the US Government about Japanese competition. Build something that people want and you will profit.

Hell, build something consumers feel is worth their money, and they will profit.

DC Longbeds come with the auto trans. For the Frontier, you can only get a 5' bed, that's the way they come. So to get comparable trucks for the test, they had to use the DC Longbed.

The Fronty is now available with the longbed for '07, but obviously wasn't around for this test.

One would think, but my 16 month old Tacoma with 12k miles has a fucked up clutch, a squeaky clutch pedal, a rattly driver's side window, a seam in the dash that has grown to twice its original size, and squeaky rear springs. 2 of these have TSB's out, and the other 3 will be covered under warranty, but they still happened. Toyota does not build vehicles like they used to. It's still a great truck, but I've had no less niggles with it than any other brand. Of course the Tacoma is built in the US, which is probably part of the reason - Japanese people take pride in any job they have, where most Americans just want to work hard enough to not get fired.
