Think I'm getting the Creative Labs Vision:M for Christmas, which is similar to the iPod video unit.
Are there video in jacks on these that will work with backup cameras? I'd like to pull the mp3 player out of the console...or open the console to see a mounted mp3 player, and see the backup camera input.
Anyone have any first hand experience with the two of them to make my Christmas shopping decisions go quicker?
I checked both products....no video input specified. (see specs for A/V connection)
If you have no plans changing your head unit, why not use your laptop or a portable DVD player? It has bigger screens compared to those types of media players. I'm saving some money to put a backup camera (out of $$$!) so I bought this:
The laptop would not be a good solution for me because I would have to boot up each time...plus I'm looking for something I could conceal and keep in the truck. Thanks though.
I wasn't sure about the video in jacks...I was thinking the Archos might have had them since it is actually a DVR os it does have some kind of input. Let me go back and check the Archos and make sure that is the DVR model...
Edit: sorry, I think the DVR recorder is an accessory docking station...all the inputs are here on the spec sheet...
my buddy keeps an old Pentium3 laptop running w/ windows2000 underneath the front passenger seat. he has it connected to a 4x6" touch screen console. boot up time is less than a minute. disable most OS startup services and it boots faster. laptop is set to boot using a console button and set to auto shutdown once he removes the ignition key.
-not only an mp3 player for the truck, it also is a DVR, so I can record shows straight from my cable box and take them on the go (sopranos-to-go!).
-T-Struck, you'll love this...there's a helmetcam accessory (with headband mount) that includes the travel DVR accessory so I don't have to buy the DVR docking station. Awesome for cycling...recording sweet rides, crazy descents, group sprints, idiot drivers...etc.
-with that travel DVR accessory it gives me a/v inputs so presumably I can use it as a monitor for a backup camera as well. Talked to the tech guy at Archos and he was pretty sure that would work.
I'm sure I can pull a PB and find a neat way to mount it in the console as a removable device. Here's the Helmet cam...with the travel DVR device that has the inputs...
Man I just had a cool thought, and its a little off topic but...
Picture this, it would be so nice if one of those double din head units was detachable, it would look like the Archos when detached, you could use it in the house, as a dvr device, mp3 player whatever, take it on the go with you and the doc it back into the truck and wallah its your headunit again.
Man I hope that becomes a reality someday, plus it would be anti theft, since you would be carrying around with you
nova, have you considered using the helmetcam as the backup camera? (and buy a second camera unit for your biking) you know you can always do that. but i doubt it will endure wear and tear out there. hell, if it works, I might even do that.
Actually, the backup cameras have a wider angle, night-vision, and cheaper. The helmet cam comes with the travel DVR adapter boxed with it (so you don't have to buy the DVR docking station) and costs $104.00 to $125.00. Part of that price is the DVR adapter that has all the video in and video out ports, so you'would be paing for that twice if you bought a second helmet cam...
