Tire Pressure Warning Light Came On??

My tire pressure warning indicator came on yesterday morning. I checked the pressure and all tires were a little low- 27.5 lbs. Yesterday was the coldest morning yet since I have had the truck, just below 30 degrees, so i'm sure the loss in pressure was due to contraction.

My question is are the sensors that sensitive? Anyone else seen this?

I would expect it to only come on if a tire was significantly lower than the others. But I'm not the Toyota engineer that came up with the things.

The sensors have a low limit (obviously) that is based on what you set the sensors to. It is a pretty narrow range. If you set the sensors at 37psi and it now is 27, yes it will trip them. Also there is one in the spare as well. Readjust all the tires including the spare to your normal cold psi the reset the system. It's in your manual.

Yes. My indicator has tripped twice already since the summer ended. Once after our first cold snap in the fall, and then again when we got down in the 20's. The second time I couldn't find a tire measuring below 30, but I went around and "touched up" each tire with a shot of air, and it reset.

I'll have too look at the manual again, as the truck is still like new and I have maintained the 29PSI that is recomended, so it was 1.5 PSI low.

I did not check the spare, but It's never been used either. I have no idea what the origional factory settings are and was not aware it could be adjusted.

It has done it to me twice so far. Both times were because of cold weather. They seem to turn on around 28psi. Since you have to drop the spare tire to check and fill it, I pumped it up to 40 so that I don't have to maintain it as often.

Question I have is if I bump up the tire pressure to 33-35 (as I don't like running the recommend 29) and reset the tire pressure system will it now be using the adjusted pressure as the norm.

No. It will not. And you won't have to reset the pressure system. As soon as it notices that the pressure is normal it will automatically turn off the warning light.

mine just came on again. All tires are set at 30psi, except the spare. Too freakin cold to lay under there and drop it. So I will wait till it isnt so bad. So im sure its just my spare. Guess I live with the light for a little bit.

You don't have to lower it. I've used this gauge to check and fill the spare tire without lowering it.

My light was coming on every cold morning, so I finally got tired of seeing it and bumped all the tire's up to 35 psi cold. I seem to notice a couple more miles on my tank of gas and no more warning light, so 35 is where I will leave them.

My understanding of how the system works is this. Set all tires to the desired presure (cold of course) and reset the Low pressure warning system. That tells the system your optimal desired pressure. If the pressure drops 10psi (or more) from your optimal setting it trips the light. All 5 tires need to be set at the same pressure. The sensors are not pre-programmed from the factory for only one optimal setting. This is a user changeable setting. The Toyota manual is a little vague on this. Our Lexus manual spells it out very clear. Same system in both vehicles.

I dont have tpm's on my taco, but on my wifes armada, and all VW's they go off at 28 psi. Someone please correct me, but since it is gov't madated to have these things on all trucks and suvs now, did the govt set the designated pressure that the light comes on?? It sounds like everyones turned on after they dropped to below 28 psi. Is that maybe the standard? Just striking up conversation.

No, they can't really mandate a minimum pressure since tires all have different requirements. Some brands of tires are quite happy at 28psi. Having to over inflate just to keep the sensor happy makes no sense.

I will do an experiment tomorrow using my theory on how they work. I will adjust all the pressures to 28 psi and reset the system. That should tell the system not to alert until 18psi (+/-).
