So I am driving home from work, roads I very familiar with, so I was;t paying the best attention, got up to about 55mph (yes in California 55 is common on streets, they are as big as highways in other states, this is a 5 or 6 lane road I am speaking about) when I noticed the new BMW 3 series in front of me at a dead stop at an average following distance (3 car lengths maybe?)
Well, I thought for sure I was going to hit, thinking great here comes my first accident, wondering what the damage would be, how my insurance company would handle the claim etc., you know all that $hit that can manage to roll threw your head in mere glimpse of a second
The truck just stopped, even with the 33's, I couldn't hardly notice the ABS (if it was there) no screeching, no dramatic scene, the truck just stopped
had I been in my 2002 Blazer I had before this truck I am sure I would have ended up in the back seat of that car. So to wrap it up, I have had a great experience with the breaks on my Tacoma
You didn't say, but you must have swerved to miss the BMW. It's impossible to stop a vehicle in 3 carlengths from 55 mph. Your reaction time would likely use up 3 carlengths.
Then again, unless you were tailgating (like most), the gap was probably considerably more and just seemed like 3 carlengths at the time. That's awfully close at 55.
Toyota always had great brakes. Since their first 4x4 1979 truck. Never had any problem with stopping force. Some of my Toyota's had 42" tires and they all stopped great!
I didn't know people were bitching about the brakes, and if they are, what are they complaining about? I've had no problems with mine up to the 6k miles I have. The truck dives more than my Mazda3, but it's a truck, and the front brakes are biased. I don't have squeeling either.

I think the stock brakes are pretty good too. But I've got some EBC slotted rotors and Hawk brake pads waiting to be installed anyway. It never hurts to upgrade.

At any rate -- congrats on the happy ending.
No I didn't swerve, there was a car dealership to my right and other cars to the left, so that would have had a bad ending either way probably. I am not posotive about all the distances but it really did stop on a dime!

Not sure exactly what, but I have seen threads with titles about the brakes and have seen it on a couple a list compiled about problems with the tacomas and the brakes being one of them. Someone said they were mushy and din't feel natural or something, I like em

actually that was the tip of the ice berg, I seriously had many more factors come thru my head, like what the damage would be if I had the randy ellis light bar I want, thought maybe I would now get it since I would be playing the insurance game, it really is amazing that amount of things you can think in a single instance, but I have always over analyzed things, it drives my wife nuts!
I probably missed some brakes threads, but I only remember people complaining about a "mushy" brake feeling.
Our Sport has this mushy feeling while my Off-road has a much harder feeling. Really don't know why.
i noticed this same thing...
altho our sport had normal cali pkgs...
where now the offroad has trac and vsc.. i think that affects how the pedal feels. i didnt like it at first in the OR but not its starting to feel a little more normal.

Yeah, I was beginning to think that the whole trac and vsc was causing the diff. in feel.
It's weird switching back and forth btwn the sport and the OR, haha.
