I got bored and decided to mess with the coin box...

For the past 11 weeks or so I have been living off fastfood for dinner since I stay at school until traffic dies. Everytime I reach inside the coin box to get coins I always get the incorrect amount. I turn on the map light but that doesn't really do anything and my friends tell me to carry a flashlight but I'm too lazy... So I told myself that I need to get a light source well here it is...

It automatically turns on when you open the coin box all the way so no switches. yay for being lazy

Cool. I never use my "coin box". I guess I forget about it. Plus I don't want to hear change rattling around.

9 volt battery I wasn't good at physics so I didn't want to tap into any of the car's wiring =/

Find a 12 volt LED and tap into the empty spot in the middle of the fuse box. It's ignition controlled and it's only a few inches away from that coin holder.

haha i have so many things running out of that slot. it's probably unsafe. i have one main power wire that is connected to the switch for my floor lights, then about 3 different taps for other things that needed power coming from that power wire. it's quite the interesting fuse slot.

Why would the wires fry? Add an inline fuse if you're worried.

That's understandable. Well, just send me a PM if you decide that you want to do something that requires a little wiring.

The LED in the change holder was a good mod BTW. Nobody else has done it yet, that I know of. How did you connect the wires from the battery to the LED? I assume that you didn't solder anything.

Here is what I drew up before I started.

Make sure you soder the negative wire also.

I placed a wire from the neg bulb to the side of the box so when it opens it will make contact with the neg wire that is connected to the battery which turns the LED bulb on.

Here is a picture of the 9V battery connector.

The battery is held in place by the heavy duty double sided tape! (holds upt o 5lbs) and i just electric taped all the wires down =)

And the finished product...Sorry if the directions are confusing I tried my best =)

WOW, thanks for the write up, I was wondering how you were able to turn it on when you opened the door. That is must mod for my taco and my wife's civic. I'm always bitching about how I can't see what denomonation I need, I just end up grabbing a handfull of change and picking through for what I need.

Where did you purchase the LED? How long will the 9v last? Granted, it won't be on that much.

I got the LED at radio shack for 6 bucks you can get it online for cheaper or shop around but I was a "I need it now" kinda thing... the LED is only about 3.6 volts but there are some that are less and you're only opening the change holder for about 20 seconds each time so it should last a while.
