mine has downhill assist... the 6 speed manual tranny! HAHAHAHA just downshift and let out the clutch... same as the expensive one on an auto... and it probably is loud because it uses the engine to brake so you don't have to apply the brakes and lose traction...

It's an option for all 2005+ (and in the 2003+ 4Runners), but not many Tacomas have it.
andygriffith - I've got it, and sure it's noisy, but I think it's a pretty functional (albeit limited) utility for steep, rocky (or muddy) decents. Rather than worrying about gas and brake interaction and speed management, you can focus on the decent path and obstacles. The noise is similar to what you get with VSC and TRAC, and so I'm thinking it uses the same system, but just applies the braking to all wheels, so you get that noise and pulling as the system holds back the 4000lbs + downward force.
I'm thinking the automatics have this option with their VSC and trac. control system. I don't seem to have this system in mines and I haven't seen it in any other 6 sp. trans. Unless this DAC thing is a totally separate option from the VSC and Trac. control?

however they removed the hill start control on the 07s.. so it actually uses the traction system to hold you still on a hill.. thats pretty cool, started rolling backwards down the driveway in D just a lil and the system made some noises and held me still. very cool!

+1.
DAC is right up there with the brilliant 'Auto LSD' button on a 4wd truck. Anybody have the electronic doodad full house? VSC,TRAC,DAC, and AUTO LSD? Isn't there a HAC too?

yea ive got em all... locker.. vcs... trac... dac.. rsca off button... the HAC is now built in with the VSC/Trac system

You are entitled to your opinion, but I think DAC has some real value in steep terrain. Low gear can't keep your truck from running too fast, and applying the brakes can cause sliding and skidding. DAC keeps a steady speed without requiring gas/brake interplay which can cause you problems on slippery surfaces.
i have tha 5 speed auto..at times when i brake going down a hill, the trans downshifts itself to the next lower gear thus holding back ..is this what youre talking about??

No - we're talking about hills where 1st gear/low gear isn't enough to keep your truck from accelerating. In a normal situation, you would need to supply manual braking (along with your engine braking) to slow yourself down and keep the truck under control (for the conditions). The DAC uses the truck's electronics to sense and analyze the situation, and apply wheel braking in such a way that you maintain a slow, steady speed (I can't remember, I think it's around 5-10 mph) as you descend.
That's the idiot's explanation of DAC, but you get the idea.
Anyone else out there have a Taco equipped with Downhill Assist?
If so, have you used it? Is it as loud and as obnoxious as mine?
I've used it once and the loud and obnoxious part is actually the individual brake actuators that are clicking on and off to control wheel spin and slipping to maintain the 5mph that the DAC is set for. Touch the gas or touch the break and it automatically disengages. I think it also disengages after 2 minutes to allow the actuators to cool. No louder than antilock braking kicking in on a slippery surface. I actually had hill start assist kick in once going up an icy slope. Scared me at first until I realized that it was the actuators keeping me from slipping backwards. Worked great. I'll deal with the noise if it works.
Of all the places I've been so far, I've never had any trouble with controling the speed at which I decend at, 4x4 4Lo 1st gear. Although, I can see some random situations where it would be helpful to have the DAC.
So is it where only automatics have this or do the manual trans have this also? I'm thinking only automatics have it due to the different gearing between the 5sp automatic and the 6 sp.
Btw, this traction control really sucks in sand, mud and slippery hills. Totally works against the user. Thankfully the rear locker cancels trac. control, VSC and ABS....it saved me twice. Hunting last weekend was a classic example....sheesh...
