I would like to put this to bed, and if there is anyone that went thru any vibration issues with their 4WD, and it is normal, I will just move on stay happy.
New 2007 AC-4WD-AT-TRD Sport-Tow Pkg-OE tires/Bridgestone 265/65/17 HT's. I do not remember this when first driving after delivery, and probably did not pay any attention to it, if it was there.
At 25 mph, very noticeable, more then at higher speeds. Just a humming vibration, feel it more in the seat, none at steering wheel. 50 mph, more then at 60 mph. Downhill coast at speed, still there. On acceleration, hardly there at all. Feel it when speed bleeding down at slower speeds.
Stopped at bank drive in today, sitting idling, I feel a resonance, still like a vibration. Is this normal in this Taco? This is my 4th Tacoma, 2 others were 4WD and 1 Pre-Runner. Did not use 4WD much at all in the other 2. Did not notice this in other Tacoma's.
If anyone is living with this, and has gone thru the service/complaint/dealer can't duplicate/stage, let me know, and I can live with it.
Any experience with this, I would appreciate it. Other then this, best Tacoma of them all.
There are a lot of threads discussing this, but nobody (including dealers) has come up with a solution. Any dealer will tell you this is normal. There is only one real fix that I know of at this point and that is a custom one piece drive shaft which will cost you @ $400.00. There are a lot of us here that have tried everything from tire balance, front end alignment, axel shims, carrier mount shims etc... anybody? let me know if I am leaving anything out. Personally, I have exhausted every avenue that I know how to do. Some folks here have the problem and some don't.. I can tell you that every truck that I have driven that is exactly the same as mine all do it to some degree. Most of the folks that are having this issue have lifted or modified their suspension in one way, shape or form. Basically is comes down to pinion angle and the fact that the suspension on the new generation truck is a bit sensitive to modification. IMO, any modification to the suspension is exaggerating an already existing problem with the drive line design (two piece drive shaft) more importantly, the center carrier bearing. I had a set of super-spring helper springs on that I had to take off because of this. Now that the springs are off the problem is not as bad, but it is still very noticeable. Toyota has made it clear to that they are going to do nothing about it. We are just being told to live with it and if you can't, the one piece drive shaft will do the trick. Unfortunately at our own cost. I actually have one on order as we speak. Worst case scenario, if it doesn't cure the problem I have 30 days to return it. If you do a search you will find that there are a couple of guys who put the one piece shaft on and have no more vibrations. They commented on how smooth their trucks are now. Hope this helps. I will post results when I get it installed

I have this problem (06 TRD 4X4 Crew Cab V6 automatic) and after taking it to the dealer they said it was normal. I called to complain to customer relations. Notice especially in stop-n-go traffic in 1rst gear, 20 mph or so and at 1200 to 1500 rpm. I've been trying to tune it out, but it's annoying in traffic.
I've got the vibrations on my stock DC 4x4. Feel it in the steering wheel, in the seat, on the armrest. Took it to the dealer and they rebalanced the tires. No noticable effect. I've done alot of searching here and it could be the tire balancing, the driveshaft, or transmission(notice a shudder going through 25mph??). The service manager today said that the rack and pinion steering on the Tacoma is sensitive. So, add the incredibly jiggly ride I'm having on smooth highways it seem impossible to tell what exactly is causing the problem. I am really trying to like this thing but after two weeks I'm wishing I could go back in time and pass on the Tacoma.

Craig - I do not believe it is going away. Reading post's on this subject, looks like it has to be lived with, try the driveshaft exchange, or get rid of it. I have an appointment with the service department tomorrow, just to document it. I am not going to lose any sleep over it. In 1999, I purchased a new Isuzu Rodeo, 2WD. Same issue, and after a year, I won an arbitration against Isuzu. They ordered a new Rodeo, it came in, I took it for a test drive, and it was worse then the first one. I kept the original one, and they put new Michelin LTX/MS tires on it. I drove it for 114K miles, forgot about the vibration, and moved on. It was a very reliable vehicle, very powerful at all times.
I would forget about the rack and pinion, it is in the driveline. The dealers will only advise after talking to their zone office. The vibration is mostly in the 25 mph range.
If this pickup was just a "truck", I would not care, but it is more like a nice 4Runner with a bed in back. I needed 4WD for getting around on some property this coming year.
Hey All,
I also have problems with vibrations in my 06 TRD Sprot 4X4 Double Cab.
I have tried the drealer and a toyota Rep. to no avail. Toyota Cares won't even answer my emails anymore.
I had the drive shaft tested for proper alignment at a Spicer Drive Shaft Shop.
Spicer makes the drive shafts for Toyota by the way.
According to the shop the drive shaft was out of tolerance.
The stub at the rear of the front half was welded in .035" off and the
spicer max is .003" so that is .032" off. this is where the Hanger Bearing is mounted.
The rear shaft runout max is .015" and my shaft was .025" out.
This was the only spec that the toy rep could come up with was that
the toyota spec said .024" max. The Toy rep said that was "Close Enough".
I found a way to lessen the steering wheel vibrations, you have to remove the cover from the bottom half of the steering wheel. Now move your wheel adjuster up and down. You will see
the bolt that the lever is connected to going through the center of it. On the right side there is a small nut the moves with the lever.
Take a wrench and loosen this nut enough to lessen the vibrations.
What I did was loosen it until i could pull the steering wheel up and down with the tensioner pushed up. Then I tightened the nut back a little just so I couldn't move the steering column up and down anymore. I does help, but it is not perfect.
I hope this helps a little.

Just wondering if anyone has had their driveshaft balanced and if so, did it make a difference? For the hell of it I called a place in town that specializes in driveshafts and they quoted me $50 (taking the driveshaft to them) to balance it. Appreciate everyones' input.
More input, figure this. Yesterday, at the drive in bank teller, I was in gear, foot on brake,(where else?). There was the exact duplicate of vibration at idle. In the steering wheel, seat and center console. Someone posted about the spare tire vibrating.
I don't want it to be that simple. But, doing the same thing at idle in gear? In neutral, the vibration backs off about 70%, but still noticeable. I came home today, parked, got under the rear, looked up at the spare and gave it a whack. bzzzzzzzzzz..... Too easy to be that.
As I said in other post, most vibe in the 25 mph and lower range. There is hardly any vibe when accelerating from 20 mph up to 60 mph. 65 mph, there is less.
I will see what the expert's say tomorrow. If there is any TSB's on this, I am sure we will not see it, but, the place I bought Toyota's from has an excellent service reputaton, time to take their temperature.
