Remote Starter with a Manual Transmission

I've had some trouble locating a shop that will install a remote starter on a vehicle with a manual transmission.
Anyone install a remote starter with the Manual Transmission?
If so, did you have to do it or did you have a shop do it?
How difficult are these to install yourself?

By the way, I am the only one who ever drives this vehicle & I always leave it in Neutral when parked.

I'm sure you would have problems finding somebody to install one on a manual vehicle. I know I sure wouldn't do that here at my shop. All it takes is somebody to forget and leave it in gear and next thing you know, the vehicle is smashing other vehicles, houses, people etc as it trys to start.

It is fairly simple to install if you have a knowledge of wiring and where to locate what you need. Bypassing the clutch safety switch is no problem either...BUT....I highly advise against it!!!

I agree with Chad... I thought about this, but you never know when someone else may drive the vehicile and it just takes one... if you are wanting the remote start so the heater works faster, why not a block heater? Other than that, I see no benefit to the remote start.

Remote start is ultimately bad for your engine. Idling increases the amount of fuel dilution in your oil, inhibits the oil from lubricating correctly and leads to more engine wear.

Warm up your truck for a minute or two. Drive off slowly. You'll be up to temp and warm as a bug in rug in about 3 minutes (see "happy with your heat" thread). All your moving parts will warm up at the same time as well. Not just the engine. You're better off in the long run.

I wouldn't attempt installing one myself. The truck is worth too much. The anti-theft transponder is a pain in the ass and you'd render that worthless.

Remote start gets a big from me. Save the money and get a nice jacket and some gloves.

I guess I'm spoiled. My old vehicle had a remote starter and I loved it in the winter. No need to scrape the windows in the winter and not freezing my ass off when I get in. I guess as I get older I'm becoming more of a pussy. Never thought of the anti-theft transponder though. Oh well, thanks for the feedback anyway.

Shops won't do it for its to big a liabilaty ishu... If it were to remote start in gear and hurt someone they could come back and sue the shop for all its worth for making the vehicall unsafe data data data...

I do know severall people with remote starts on mtx's and all but one has at one time or other started it in gear and smashed something up... One running into a show car causing about $8,500 in damage *mostly the house of coler paint job but still* ie it will be left in gear somehow sometime and boom

On a sidenote the one guy that never wrecked his had a remote start that was ment for mtx... always had to go threw a hole series of steps to have it work right *pia* but it worked... don't remeber the brand... try searching google for mtx remote start maybee

I have learned most shops will install all but one wire.
they will leave the wire in there and tell you NOT TO hook it up because it will activate the remote start.

Hate to tell you guys this but if a remote start is installed proberly on a manual transmition, it will nt start when its in gear. There is a special way you have to shut off the vehicle that will"set" the system and allow it to start with the remote. For example, on my old Civic you had to put it in neutral, pull the e-brake, push the button on the remote then get out and lock the doors which shuts off the car. It sounds more annoying than it is. Other sysetms make you put it in neutal then pull the ebrake twice. I think the only time I every heard of a vehicle starting in gear was when they first came out and not installed right. Oh by the way, I am from Saskachewan where it seems like 3 out of 4 people have remote start.

remote starter

have a proper manual transmission kit installed.....it does require the pre-setting of the brake ect..but it's no big deal. As for warming up your car...it shouldn't be over-done, but it won't hurt anything if its warm enough to get heat out of it....especially when it's -40. you try sitting on a frozen-cold seat at -40.....a pair of gloves and jacket doesn't soften the foam up one tiny bit!....

The last responses are correct. A had a friend of mine installed one that had all the interlocks set to prevent starting in gear. Once sequenced and the door shut, your set. If anyone opens the door after the sequence was set, it would disable the remote start. Can something go wrong....

Absolutely... I seemed to have to reset my remote start on an Automatic if I got a shock putting the key in the ignition??

Matt :o)

Sounds like you need heated seats... not remote start.

OK, my interest has been renewed.
The only issue I see is the anti-theft transponder.
Guess I have some research to do.
Thanks for the info guys.

Check out CompuStar. They make remote starts especially for manual transmissions. My S4 has remote start and its awesome. Go to their site and look up dealers around your area.
