I am new to Toyotas. I just got my first (Taco) less than 90 days ago. I just noticed that when I turn the climate control selector to any of the two that blows on the windshield that the AC kicks on. But heres the kicker. The AC light does not come on telling me that it's on. I can tell it's on by the smell of it and the fact that when I turned the selector to feet it began fogging up my windows again. If I wanted the AC to come on I would have turned it on. This sucks and is exactly like domestic vehicles. I wish there was a way to blow air on the windshield without the AC on too.
when you have it in defrost(blowing on the windshield) it will blow cold air(compressor will come on) if you don't want cold air blowing on the windshield, turn the tstat to the middle position, otherwise, the compressor will come on.

Wah?!?
The A/C comes on intermittently to remove moisture from the air. It kicks on maybe every 30 seconds for only a second or two. It shouldn't be affecting your in-cab temperature.
Whether it comes on or not has nothing to do with where the temp dial is set.
Most cars use the A/C in conjuction with the defroster (windshield) setting. No, it will not indicate the A/C is on. It is not kicking on for the intent of cooling. Only for removing condensation.

alright since we are in the climate control issues i have one.
when i turn the air positon knob to just the feet it will blow on the windshield too. when i turn it to the just the windshield it will blow in the vents to the passengers too.
i did remove the a/c controls to install a dvd player and i think it lost its memory.
does anyone know if the dealer is the only place to fix it?

+1
Before we had that, people would bitch about poor defog performance. We would
tell them to turn it on.

Still under warranty? Take it to the dealer, show them it's not working correctly and have them replace the HVAC unit. The worst they could do is say no.
I doubt it lost it's memory. I'm sure they don't use volatile EPROM from the early 90's to program our HVAC units. Maybe you messed up some of the wires when putting it back in, you could be getting a cross connection or it's all in your head and it's been that way all along.
I wouldn't mess with it yourself. Not worth the hassle or the chance of f@#king it up more.

Well apparently it does because you said yourself the windshiled fogs up when you turn it off. So I guess it does know what's best for you.
This isn't isolated. They've been linking the defroster and the compressor for 10+ years now.
OK. But the damn thing is like a crack addiction. Once you turn it on, you can't turn it off. If you do the windows will begin fogging up real fast. Plus you have to put up with that vile smell of "recently turned off AC". So once you turn it on you must leave it on or suffer from worse fogging than you originally had.
Wait a few months. Your truck is brand new. I don't have the smell anymore.
I love the system. Clears the condensation in a few seconds.
Or you can do what I do most of the time. Crank the heat up a notch or two above what you would normally have it set on and drive around with the window cracked. No moisture. Still warm. In your case, no smell. Everybody wins.

@boone yeah you could be right that it was always like that. is there any way you could check yours and see if it happens the same way im explaining it?
im not trying to compare manufacturers but i work for volkswagen and i know in certain occasions the a/c controls need to be reset.
My honda allows me to reprogram so that I have the choice of A/C or not with defrost. I'd like to be able to do the same with my Tacoma, but it doesn't seem to be possible.
I'd rather think for myself too. My wife tends to set it to defrost and forget it, and would be running the a/c all the time. At least now she can turn it off, which she does most of the time. It's dry where I'm at.
