Black smoke? Should I be worried?

I drove my truck to the dealer this morning (40 miles). Picked it up tonight. About halfway home I jumped on it a bit to pass some stooge that was meandering. My GF was behind me in the Camry. She said a big plume of black smoke exited the tailpipe, followed by a smaller puff. It's a V6 with 17K miles. Dealer serviced religously, on time every time. Oil was changed 2.5K miles ago. I run 89 Sunoco. I don't drive like an old man. I usually hit it pretty good, at least once or twice per trip. Making lights, or whatever.

Any opinions? Should I be concerned?

Prolly just some carbon build-up. I can rev the engine and I get little black specs of "stuff" all over the fender.

Was the truck still cold when you jumped on it? Engines do not combust fuel fully when the combustion chamber is not up to operating temperature. This takes longer in a engine with aluminum heads.

P.S.
Black = fuel/rich
White = water/condensation/coolant
Blueish = oil

I was 20 miles into the trip. Smithtown Toyota to Oceanside. Hopefully it was just carbon and nothing more. Hopefully it wasn't blue! MY GF was the witness. Whether it was black or blue smoke, who could tell at 40 mph at 5:45 pm? Anyway, I'm not really worried, just curious. Thanks for the input.

+1 on ajglennon 's post.

I'd take another try at it with someone that you have confidence in judgement of.

When you punch it, you are adding more fuel to the mixture. That sudden adding of fuel is going to cause some black smoke. It is just running rich at this point. Also some carbon was most likely broken loose. Nothing to worry about. If it is idling and black smoke is coming out, then it is time to start worrying about it.
