I feel really stupid right now. I moved from New York to Florida about two years ago. I never renewed my license or anything. I still have a new york license and it expires in a few months. So I am going to have to register my car in Florida within that time and get a Florida license.
The problem: I cannot find my title for my car. I looked online at the NYS dmv and it said that you have a maximum of ten days after moving to notify them your new address in order to get a new title. Im assuming I cannot then get a new title if its been two years. Since I will have to register my car in Florida, I need the title so I dont know what to do.
I think I am screwed. The only good thing is that I have about three months until my license expires. Any ideas? Am I really screwed?
Is your truck bought and paid for. If it is'nt can't you get the title from whoever has the title of your truck be it Toyota or the bank you financed it from?
I am actually going up in a few weeks to visit. Can I just go in and get one? Or do you think they will mail it to me? Because they cant mail it to me because I obivously no longer live at the address they have on record.
No I thought they might only mail it to you. Its a good thing if they give it to you in person because the address they have I no longer live at and I dont want them to know that I no longer live at that address.
So I guess if they give it to me in person I can just stop by there when I go up to visit.
Another question: I am driving my dads car up and he is using mine (he lives in florida as well) while Im visiting. Can I show the NYS DMV copies of everything? I would bring the originals but then my dad cant use my car becasue he wont have any papers.
They mail it to you. It comes down from Albany. You just need to go to DMV with your registration, license, insurance card, and another form of valid ID. You will fill out some paperwork and it will then be mailed. A friend of mine had to do it once, I do not remember how long it took. This was about 5 years ago so you may want to call to see if anything has changed.
You will probably need an ORIGINAL birth certificate or passport as you 2nd form of ID. I just got a copy of a title in Texas a few months ago. You go in, fill out a form, show them your IDs and they print one on the spot here.
say you just now moved. How do they know you didnt if they still think you live in NY. Tell them you just moved and need the title...? Maybe not though.
Either way you do it, I'd tell the DMV you just moved or are moving to Florida. I would NOT tell them you've been down there 2 years. They could complain, hold up the process, or maybe even fine you for the delay.
Well, that's a guess anyway as I've been pulled over before a few times. A couple of those times I had moved a couple weeks or longer before that without updating the address on my license. First time was in SC. I got a got a $100 ticket for not updating my address. Now I ALWAYS tell the cops "I moved in this weekend" or "I moved last week" depending on which is less than 7-10 days. I swear it never pays to be honest with a Cop or the DMV.

Also, when moving from one state to another, you'll have to pay the difference in sales tax. Assuming 4% in New York - And 6% in Florida. You will have to pay the 2% difference on what they asssume the vehicle is worth now. For example - Purchased 2 years ago for $20,000- worth $16,000 today. 16,000 x 2%=$320. Florida's going to ask for the money when you try to get your plates. All the states have this deal. If I were to move from Florida to New York, I would owe nothing as NY's tax is lower. However, if I moved to NY from Colorado, I'd have to pay the difference between 4% and 2.9% (Colorado). to NY.
Are you living in Florida ? No problem. Just go in there with someone, tell them you can't speak English. Everything will be fine.
Adios
That's probably true too!! Which is kinda sad when you think about it....
@ Sheeter
It's too bad they don't refund the difference when the one you move to is lower than the one you leave. Seriously tho, if they don't refund differences like that, why do the CHARGE for differences?! Especially if, say, you bought it 4 years, 9 months ago and are just about to pay it off.... Stupid laws.
