Technical Service Bulletin...it tells the maintenance people what to fix and how to do it for problems that are recurring amongst many owners...
generally speaking though most dealers want you to at least show some sign of the problem for them to do the work...and you have to be in warranty...however sometimes you can go in and just tell them to do it

they are not recalls...they are not issued by the governemt for safety, they are issued by toyota as a guide and response to issues that happen frequently

well until we see the TSB we won't know which VIN#s it applies too. Hopefully your dealer will do, I'd imagine on this one you don't have to come in with a bent tailgate to get it reinforced...

Say I take the 07 taco in for an oil change, do I have to show signs of a problem (like a dented tailgate) or ask them to do the tsb? Do they not do it on their own?
Why would they do it on their own...it costs them money to do the work...you generally have to know about it and say something...sometimes you can bring the TSB in and say hey i want this done, just depends on your dealer

Anybody know when these changes would take place in new production vehicles?
Like how would I tell if a new truck on the lot had the reinforcements done?
I am a new member but I have been reading here for several months. I am waiting to pull the trigger on an '08 order in August for a 4X4 TRD Sport DC LB. Usually when a TSB is issued, don't they typically implement a fix on the new production trucks as well so that this would be fixed on all new trucks beyond a certain VIN #?
I just called my local service department about it. The guy said 1) this is new to him... it came out April 30th; 2) they would have to send it to their body shop for the work; 3) the TSB showed no VIN range so it applies to all '05-'07's; 4) he didn't think they would be able to do it unless the tailgate was brought in with some sort of damage...
So, according to that train of thought, I'll have to damage the tailgate first (not on purpose of course) and then bring it in. Not only does that mean that they'll then have to do the TSB, but they'll have to repair/ replace the tailgate on top of that. The guy didn't seem to buy my explanation that the TSB was a PREVENTATIVE measure.
I left a message for his Service Manager and am waiting for a call back from him. We'll see where this goes. If anyone else has any luck with their dealership, please let us know.
