Does anyone here have the factory remote start? If so what are the pros and cons?

I had an aftermarket one installed and I love it. It is great for warming it up in the winter and cooling it off in the summer. I had it installed by Circuit City about a week after I bought my truck.

Hope this helps,

Kevin

I'm not sure they offer a remote start for the Taco. I'm going to ask though tomorrow when I take the truck in for my first oil change (it's free, I'll do them after this one).

I've looked at Best Buy and Circuit city, looking at around $200 for the bare minimum, but I'm not sure about the warranty issue.

What brand remote start are you guys/gals buying? Are you getting them with security systems as well? And lastly did you have any trouble with the installation because of the Taco's little security piece.

Mine is the Python brand. I didn't want an alarm so I only bought the remote start.

Pros: none.

Cons: waste of gas, bad for engine.

How can people survive walking to the pre-warmed/cooled vehicle?

I can find dozens of sites/sources that conclude it's bad, and not recommended, I can't find one site that conclude idling is good for your engine. It's gotten better with modern fuel systems but it is still better and quicker to warm up your engine by driving it. Anyone that still warms up their engine by idling is 30 years behind.

Here's the first site that popped up.

In cold weather an idling engine will never reach operating temperature, especially if you blasting the defroster.

federal law made remote starts illegal in manual's, its a HUGE fine if you are caught.

I had one in my work van (an automatic), it was AWESOME for the Las Vegas summers, with interior temps reaching 130+ degrees in parking lots, i would start it while loading up, so it would only run 2-3 minutes and get down to nominal temps. I know it's even worse in Phoenix, i worked there for a summer and made the mistake of hopping into my car with leather seats while wearing shorts, it burnt sooo badly.

I have since read a few articles and even been advised by dealerships (2 of them actually offer it as an option) against remote starts because they say warming up your car in cold weather is really bad for lubrication, since you are moving cold oil, and its much better to immediately go when you start the car up. I guess it makes sense.
