Time to juice up my '05 Tacoma

Alright guys, I'm brand new to this whole thing and need your expert opinions. I'm sure most of you guys are pros at this by now and I'm sure you have answered questions like these a 100 times. Got an '05 Tacoma TRD OR with the 4.0 and 6spd. manual and I think its time to toughen it up a bit. Everything is factory on it now except for some cosmetic stuff. I'm pretty much sold on a Toytech 3" Coil Lift w/ AAL and 285 BFG AT's. Is this lift a good choice? Will it work ok with stock shocks etc? I don't offroad a whole lot but I do every now and then so I'm not looking for anything super $$$$. But my the choice in wheels, exhaust, intake, shocks, wheel spacers, etc. is where I'm really hung up. Any opinions on the stuff below are greatly appreciated.

1. Cold Air Intake- Looking at K&N, AFE, or Volant

2. Exhaust- MagnaFlows, Toyota TRD, or Gibson

3. Wheels- Like the Dick Cepek DC-1's but I really want all black rims. Any ideas for around $200 a pop?

4. Shocks- Will factories work with the 3" lift? Or should I go with Bilstein's or Rancho's?

5. Wheel Spacers- Will these work with 285's and a 3" lift?

I know its a lot of questions but I'd love to hear a lot of opinions on this stuff.

Thanks!

1) TRD or URD intake

2) Magnaflow

3) Mojave teflons, Helo maxx 6 black, Mazzi hulks black (I have these)

4) You have the TRD off road, so you don't need new shocks

5) Don't need wheel spacers, I have 285's with my 3" lift

you don't NEED wheel spacers, but they might help. Or different backspaced wheels. My 285 rub the UCA when I turn lock to lock. Not enough to warrant new wheels, but I might get some spacers sometime. In the mean time I take it easy on tight turns, go slow, and straighten out as soon as I can. I don't have mud tires so there's no huge lugs to catch the UCA, but I figure it's not too good for either part to make them rub often

Thanks for the the welcome and the replies!

I heard from a fellow Taco owner that 285's will rub even with a 3" lift so thats why I asked about spacers. Know any good manufacturers of wheel spacers? I def don't want to put up with any tire rub.

You don't need those spacers, just gotta do some minor trimming. Check out page 3 of Toku's CarDomain.

using the correct combo of offset/backspacing on your new wheels will eliminate the need for wheel spacers.

while you don't need to get new shocks, the ride will be greatly improved with a new set. look at getting the ome's when you order the toytec lift.

And how exactly do you trim the Upper Control Arm? That's the only place mine rub, and I have trimmed nothing.

I have a 3" lift as well. Spidertrax.com has some. I was looking at a set myself at somee point.

Hey dude, just trying to help the new guy out, and I new that Toku had some pictures of the trimming that he did for the 285's. Check your backspacing or get better UCA's.

Urie? is that you man? would have thought your screen name would be "Fritz" or "Urie"?

anyway, these guys will give you tons of help, but you basically know what you need. you're only real question is how much $ you want to drop on your suspension. other than that look at pics and watch your money go out the window. Everyone has all the different exhausts and intakes you mentioned, and most people like what they have, so you probably can't go wrong with any of them. whatever you do, don't get the moto metal 951's in black, i've had them put on since you've last seen my truck. good luck man.

oh, and about the spacers, i told him he'd have to get them if he wants the lift, 285's, AND wants to retain factory wheels.

and one more thing, you MUST put a picture in the "Show Your Truck Thread" it is a rule.

Ok. But I had posted before that you didn't need to trim anything, and it only rubs the UCA... So you posting what you after me made it look like you were telling him to trim the UCA.

And regardless of Toku's page, you don't have the size tire he wants do you? So you're going off Toku's setup and preferences while some of us that do run that size tire know you don't have to trim.

He should be able to avoid the UCA rub with proper backspacing and NO spacer
it will be the same movement just done on the wheel as opossed to an additional piece.
But then he may need to trim the fender the same as he might need to do if he had gone with a spacer

Depending on your rims? That will determine if you need spacer for your wheels? If you want to use the stock rims with the 285's? YThen yes! You'll need spacers. (Spidertrax)

But if you get after market and get a set with 4.5" Back spacing, the very little trimming will be needed. If you don't offroad then you may not have to trim at all?

No one can give you deffinate answer? Depends on how your truck sits, how you plan to use it? The brand of 285'syou choose, and the rims you choose? All these things play a role in what needs to be done.

Good luck!
