I would'nt do that, you may draw too many amps from the radio when you key it up. I'd run power from the battery with an inline fuse and switch to it. It's not hard to run wire through the firewall, just follow the cable for the hood release and run your wire through that big grommett. There is a perfect place for a ground next to the battery also.

i already have a sub and an amp hooked up. so the best place is going to be the battery?

I'm just saying what I would do. If you want to tap into something, try the 12v receptacle.

Try finding an ignition controlled source on the fuse panel behind the dash and tap into that. That way your CB will shut off when you turn the truck off. If you attatch directly to the battery, you could forget to turn it off or it could cause parasitic draw when it is off.

Do you want it on all the time or just when the ignition is On?

You need as clean of a power source as you can use b/c cb's are funny and will pick up all kinds of electric noise. If you tap into another line, you'll get lots of noise. I run mine straight off the batt, and it still picks up noise when I roll the windows up/down. You just have to remember to turn it off.

You could use a power wire from the battery, but use a relay to turn it on and off with the ignition. The wiring in the relay doesn't come in contact with the main power circuit that it's connecting.

I run mine from here (along with some lights), and don't have any noticable noise other than the usual/occasional squelch:

You don't need to run a ground all the way up there. You need to make the ground as short as possible to avoid any road noise.

I think we created some confusion on this. The question was more about where to put that to the ground and the answer to that is to the truck using the shortest wire possible. As for the hot, straight from the battery is the best with a relay connected to an ignition controlled source like the CD player.

sounds like a bad ground on your antenna/ really high swr.

~or~

Did you key -up the mic with no antenna attached, cause that will kill the radio?

Might just need to adjust the squelch.
