Wanting New Tires, What Size for True Speedo/Odometer Readings?
I did a search, but couldn't find the thread I was looking for that explained my question. I have "stock" tires on my '06 Taco, Dunlop 225(?) 70/R-16's. Please forgive my not knowing exact size, but someone here probably knows what size those tires are. I remember reading on here a while back that the stock tires aren't sized for the speedometer/odometer. Is this true? If so, what size gets it right or close to right?
your odo will display the correct miles. when you change tire size after, is when it starts throwing off the tach. use this tire calculator to find out all your questions about tire size, etc.
It's been suggested that the next size up will correct the speedo from being off at the higher mph...I bought the stock size Goodyear Wranglers and the speedo was off by 8mph at 78 mph (so it should have read 70, GPS verified).

Thanks for the reply, but that answers what the change in MPH will be, but what is the correct size for the '06 Tacoma 4x4 so that MPH is correct?
my stock tires were 265/65/17 (TRD sport)
stock tires for TRD off road are 265/70/16
mine gave me the correct speed on the tach, until i upgraded
Thanks, I think that means mine is under, my stock tires are smaller than yours were. I don't have the TRD, just SR5. No bells and whistles either, just 4x4 stock everything.
Well I have 17's so this may not help. I went from stock 265-65-17 to a set of 265-70-17 and my speedometer is now correct. It was off by about 3 MPH and I verified before and after with GPS unit.

3 mph at what speed? it's usually off by a %. so like 7% at 60 mph means you're really going like 64 mph.
Mine oddly enough was off 2.5-3 mph at any speed. Went to a 1" taller tire and seems to have corrected the issue. I'm sure that could be worked into a % but its just easier for most to know that how far the MPH is off.

Stock tire size for SR5 (non-TRD) is 245/75R16.
No guarantee that your speedometer/odometer will be 100% accurate with that tire size, however. For starters, the dimensions vary from brand to brand. And many new vehicles come with a speedometer that's 2 to 3% optimistic.
