I am looking at buying a new Tacoma PreRunner regular cab 4cyl Manual and would like to get a LSD. Unfourtunatly there aren't any available in my area. Would like to get something like a TruTrak but my search hasn't turned up anything. What is available short of welding my spider gears?
There are different types of lockers and lsd's available depending on what you need it for. An lsd won't get you out of jam like a locker can but a locker is only used when it's engaged, whereas a lsd is full time. There are some mechanical lockers that are pretty good and work without driver input, such as the detroit lockers, but they make noise when it's active. Powertrax is another mechanical locker and the Powertrax No Slip Traction System is one that works full time and automatically adjusts during turns without any loud engagement noises. That's the one I"m getting put in my truck. It's one of the reasons I got the SR5 instead of the TRD Off Road. I wanted something with more grip than a lsd and I didn't want a locker that can only be engaged in 4x4 mode.
2006 4x4 Access, V6, 6spd, TRD Off-Road, tow pkg. Donahoe Co's, TC UCA's, Dakar leafs, 5125's in the back and u-bolt flip kit. TRD exhaust, CAI. URD MAF calibrator. 17x9's, 285/70/17 BFG MT KM2. Locker-mod, fog mod and console vault.
I have a Detroit truetrac lsd in the rearend of my 05' 4x4. See signature for more details. I bought mine without sr5 or trd so I could build it the way I wanted. Mine is a daily driver and spends most of the time on pavement . And here in Sunny Florida it's all sand and mud anyway so rock climbing isn't a real option. So this set up work well for me. With the Truetrac there isn't any maintance except checking the diff. gear oil level. Simple.

I haven't been able to find these available, at least not for an 2007. I have been told that tthe differentials were changed after 2005 and nothing is available for newer trucks. Is this info wrong or have I talked with the wrong people? The Powertrax would be a good choice for self installation since I wouldn't have to pull the ring gear.

They gave you the wrong information. It's available for the current generation of Tacomas. I was quoted about $1000 for it including installation. You might want to check some off road shops in your area.

Hope this helps.
You can bypass that 4x4 requirement with the locker mod in the sticky section. I didn't really consider it when I got my truck. I just wanted all the offroad equipment I could get at once so it was finanaced and under warranty. Didn't think much about the locker, but figured it would "be useful sometime". Once I did the locker mod I actually use it more.

Depends on what you want it for as others have stated. If you are going to take your truck offroad then get a locker, not an LSD. If your going to spend most of the time offroad then get an auto-locker like a Detroit or Powertrax Loc-rite - if it's a DD then get a Powertrax no-slip auto-locker or an ARB selectable locker. Just keep in mind that you need to "adjust" your driving habits with auto-lockers in bad weather and around turns.
I ordered an ARB after researching all choices. Based on needs, it came down to wanting the best selectable locker for my truck and at this time ARB is it.
PORC currently has the ARB for $699 and shipping to TN should be ~$20-25.
I just ordered the Truetrac for my Tacoma, had one in an older drag car and it work flawlessly. I've seen them used in 700hp+ cars with no problems. No cluthes means no maintenance! These are better than any LSD toyota makes. Buy a new bearing for the installation, no sense reusing something that will problably be damaged during removal. Unless you want a full locker for offroading. LSD for mall crawlers, Locker for rock crawlers!
