I know we have had a ton of exhaust threads on here guys but i have a question. after searching hundreds of exhaust sound clips i decided i liked magnaflow dual cat back the best. but the clip didn't say what muffler and what size pipe he was running. i went to my local exhaust shop and they said they would put it in for me but with 2.25" pipes. this seems a little small to me after seeing some 3" pipes that guys are running. I was told though that we shouldn't go over 2.5" with the v-6. so can someone please shed some light on this for me. im getting dizzy from it all.
I have heard that larger diameter pipes (3 inch) tend to lose torque at lower RPM while allowing better breathing at higher RPM which tends to promote more horsepower. If this is true, then where I do 99.99% of my driving I would want a smaller 2 1/2 inch pipe to give me more torque. Anybody else heard of this and agree.

I'm sorry for not searching, or checking my truck but I'm out of town and no where near my truck. Does the factory exhaust have mandrel or press bends? If it is 2.5", then would modifying the stock system (high flow muffler/cat deletes) be worthwhile, or is a whole new system really better? I know some vehicles don't gain enough for the cost of a complete exhaust to be worthwhile...

What will getting rid of the cats do? How would you do that?

Get you in trouble if you try to run it though emissions....A cat is pretty restrictive but you can get high flow cats. Now with all the power us V6 guys have....LOL I'm not sure it would help a whole lot for the trouble. I'm not 100% sure about it though....just my 2 cents worth

Ya, just wondering. Dont want to start getting illegal.
I had a pipe made up for the 91 that i could switch out when it was time to run it through....But with a little 4cyl I couldn't tell a differnce with it off

It would create more dog people.
You could always run a test pipe, or two or three, but unless you run an o2 sim, you'll get a CEL.
If you are talking true dual 2.25" that's definitely much more throughput than a single 2.5", even more than a 3". I would be uncomfortable running more than 2.25-2.5" exhaust with a true-dual. I know there are tons of people that say you can run a straight pipe with no issues, but I'll take my backpressure and keep some of that lovely low end torque.
I don't know about our V-6 Tacomoa's but I had an 85 Nissan 4cyl that removing the cat and putting a straight pipe with a glass pack muffler did wonders for.
when you say magnaflow dual cat back, are you saying each side has it's own muffer as in dual magnaflow mufflers? if so, 2.25" per side is fine.
the exhaust clip i heard just said magna flow dual cat back....? but when i went to the exhaust shop he told me he was going to put 2.25" pipes on a 1 in 2 out magna flow muffler. should i ask for 2.5" if this is the muffler i get?
