Brand new Tacoma with faulty 4x4, dealer is clueless!!!
Ok, bought a brand new 07 Tacoma double cab with TRD sport package about 2 weeks ago. Anyways last Tuesday I start it get ready to put it in reverse and I notice that the 4x4 light and the 4lo lights on the cluster are flashing. The switch is in the 2h position, have never even put it in the 4h or 4L position. I read the owners manual and it says to take it to the dealer, which I did. So Tuesaday evening I go pick up the truck and they tell me that they could not duplicate the problem and that there was no codes or errors with the system. I drive the truck home and test the 4 wheel drive system in low and high, everything works great. Wednesday morning lights are blinking again, I take it to the dealer but leave the truck running and I have a tech come out and check it out. They tell me that it is defiinately not right and have me leave it with them again. I check in later that day and they tell me that half way through running tests the system corrects it self so they pretty much stop working on it. So they give me the keys and tell me to come back again if it keeps on doing the same thing. So today every other time I drive the truck the stupid light is flashing, and when it is flashing the 4 wheel drive system does not work. I am going to take it to the dealer and leave it with them until they fix the problem, has anyone had this same problem? Any help would be great, Thanks.
I think it's coming close to lemon law. Isn't it 3 times for the same problem within a certain amount of time constitutes a defective vehicle? Within 2-3 week I'm sure you definitely qualify. Threaten them with lemon law and I'm sure they'll find the problem and take care of it right quick. Good Luck!

i used to fix appliances for a living, now i help people do it that don't know how. when i came across a problem like this, and could not find the cause, i did what most anyone does. replace everything that has anything to do with the problem. in your case, both front and rear axles, t-case, ecu, 4x4 switch, wiring harnesses and all. and if it still doesn't work, time to call toyota. stupid electronic shifter crap. shoulda left it how it was.

I'm not trying to defend dealers that give poor service, but it COULD be difficult to troubleshoot an intermittent problem when the problem has temporarily disappeared. It sounds like the trouble is appearing frequently enough for you so that you could tell the dealer to keep the truck for a few days and give you a loaner.
On any warranty related problem that is not resolved on the first trip, I think it's important to document your experience in writing; send a follow-up letter to the dealer, "return receipt" (yeah, it's a pain), but mention in that letter the earlier maintenance/repair dates and the current status of the original problem. Keep it cool, calm, collected, and factual. Keep a copy for yourself. In the letter, mention that a copy of the next letter will also be sent to the Better Business Bureau and Toyota headquarters. No dealer wants bad publicity, public or internal.
I have had a few problems with my Tacoma where it took the Toyota dealer six visits to fix. I called Toyota and had cases opened for two of the problems. I followed up with a registered letters to Toyota You need to do this ASAP. In Idaho if they can’t fix your truck in four attempts, you notify Toyota, they have one more attempt to fix it then you go to arbitration where in your case they would most likely give you a new truck.
You need to look at the Lemon Law for Oregon to get the small details and follow it exactly or you may be in for a long hassle where they keep your truck for a month and give you a Corolla. Don’t know about you but I need my truck to haul my toys and a Corolla would not do the trick. I have had several Toyota trucks and this one has had more issues than all the others put together. Also, If you notice, Toyota has had allot of Quality issues which is being talked about in auto publications.
i can back you up on that. it is hard to figure out a problem that comes and goes. the old saying comes into play there. you can't fix it if'n it ain't broke.

But honestly, give them a chance.

I just bought a 07 Tacoma acc cab, Black sand pearl, I loaded it with 920 lbs of concrete and had to use L4 so I wouldn't tear up my yard, while its not that steep its about a 20 degree+, anyway didn't use the concrete and when I got back on the road it wouldn't come out of 4L, it was 1 week old, called dealer and they said "huh". anyway I was waiting for a tow to pick it up and take it in and I decided they wouldn't want the concrete so took it out of bed, like magic it came out of 4L. the dealer said I had too much weight in but the max is 1250. Ok, so maybe that was the cause, don't know, but 2 days ago I go to finish pouring the pad and I have my Fathers wheel barrel in the back, its a big 4 wheel number, and again the truck won't come out of 4L, I think surely its not the wheel barrel but take it out anyway, and like magic it comes out of 4L. I take it in Monday because I told them that I shouldn't have to empty my bed everytime I have it in 4X4 and I want it back in 2X4. although this is not the exact same thing, has anyone heard of this?
Left it with the dealer for acouple days, they discoverded that the ECU for the four wheel drive is faulty. They ordered me a new one and will be installing it on Monday, hopfully that fixes it. I really like my truck do not really want to go through the hassel of the lemon law thing.

Wow! I bought an 07 'certified' Tacoma about a month ago. Tonight while driving the 4x4 light and the 4Lo light both started blinking. I wasn't even trying to switch between 2H and 4H when this happened. As of now my truck is stuck in 4 high.
I tired switching back to 2 High and even into 4Lo. Nothing...
After a bad dealer experience this is a real bummer as this is my first Yoter.
