I am not one to fill up when I should.... Does anyknow know how much gas is left when the low fuel light goes on? How many miles have you pushed it with the gas light on?
i made it 40 miles coming home from work one day, part of me wanted to keep pushing it but the thought of being on the side of I-85 in SC heat made me go ahead and stop
My '06 2WD RC 4 CYL. with a 21 gallon tank has taken 17.5 gallon the two times that I filled when the light went on ...... bottom line ..... 3.5 gallons left ... highway miles equals a tad over 100 miles at 30 mpg .

I have a V6 4WD, and I believe it's got a 22 gallon tank on it. I know I've gone at least 60 miles with the light on and not broken 20 gallons filling up, but that was also all highway driving on the tank. Usually I fill up not too long after the light comes on and it's around 18 gallons.

i have the 07 v6 auto 4x4 and ive pushed it to at least 340 but i wouldnt push it anyfurther than that...
When my truck was mostly stock I got over 400 miles from a tank of gas. That was all highway driving though. I went 50 more miles after the fuel light came on.
Yea both the V6 and the 4-Cyl have a 21 Gallon tank. The general concensus is there is at least 2 to 3 gallons left in the tank when the light comes on.

I always used to be worried when the light came on, but now that I know there are like 2-3 gallons left, it's not that big of a deal.
I think it contains all the answers you could hope for.
Thanks for the link, TurDonor. I know the manual says the tank holds 21 gallons, and when my light comes on, it takes about 17.5 gallons to FILL the tank, but I have been wondering how much of that 21 gallons is available (yeah, I know that hills & road crown will have an effect).
When the light comes on, I'll probably still stop within 10 miles or so, but at least I now know that I do have a relatively comfortable range of 50 or 60 miles before I really have to worry (2.7L, 5 spd, 4wd . . . 22.5 mpg suburban driving). That's good to know.
Our fuel pumps are cooled and lubricated by the fuel in the tank, good rule of thumb is to fill up at 1/4 tank to prolong the life of the pump. No one really knows how much it really effects it, but I'd rather not mess around. You're going to be putting the same amount of $ into it anyway.

Vitruvius - Thanks for the friendly advice, but this is one I have heard before and I don't agree with it. If running the tank down low caused fuel pump failures, Toyota (or any other manufacturer) would run the risk of having to replace the fuel pumps at their own expense in a massive recall. It would be a poor management decision to intentionally design a fuel pump that would fail due to an owner's decision to run the tank down to a gallon every time.
Running the tank empty, as in "out-of-gas" could potentially cause a problem, I suppose, but I have no intention of doing that; I'd be too embarassed to walk for gas. Been there, done that, but a long, long time ago. And yeah, I was red-faced, even back then.
I've never run my tank that low yet, but is the needle supposed to pass the "E" or stop on it when some of you guys ran it dry? I was just wondering, my previous truck a Ranger, could go a bit further past the "E" and didn't seem very accurate. But I was getting 20-25mpg out of it so I'm not complaining.
