I was just curious about ordering something like the 885 coil lift from toytec and was wondering if anyone knows if the shocks can be powdercoated. I was think of a blue but I am not sure of the constant movement of the spring would cause the powdercoating to crack or peel.
DucDaEvil:
Are you asking about the springs or shocks since you mention both in your question and they are two different components of the coil lift kit.
I had my coil springs powder coated on my '71 Chevelle SS with no ill effects (plus they looked great!!). Powder coating is just a powdered paint that is electrically attracted (not bonded) to a part then "melted" once it is put in an oven. It's durability is far superior to traditional paints, and can be applied to pretty much anything that can be painted.
That being said, if it is a sealed pressure vessel (i.e. shock) you can not safely powder coat the body without damaging either the seals or over pressurizing the vessel and causing it to burst (neither of which is desirable). Same for brake calipers. The powder is melted and cured between 300 and 400 degree's, and these temperatures can be harmful to seals, plastics, and certain fluids.
Thanks for the info and that is my mistake, I meant strictly the springs. I was thinking of powdercoating a set blue and wanted to see if it was worth it
Just got my 885s today. I plan up keep the c-clip at the stock ride height setting (bottom position). I am going to get the coils powder coated next week (red about $80 in case you were wondering) It should look pretty sick...
ps. the flat part of the spring goes on the top right?
(I posted this exact same thing in the 5100 thread...just wanted to share my excitement w. the world)
They look kind of orange from this picture but they are red...it just sucks becuase I wont get around to installing until next week.
