Nothing's broke. It just sounds like that.

I have owned all 3 of Toyota's 6 cylinder engines that they have used in their pickups over the past 20 or so years and they all ticked.
1)
3.0L v6 in my 1988 Toyota pickup: Ticked 10 times louder than the 4.0L in my 2006 and you could hear it at all speeds, even with the windows up. That truck had nearly 200,000 miles on it when it was totaled and I have no doubt that it could have easily made it to 300,000 miles without any major engine work if I wouldn't have been hit. That engine was pretty much maintenance free for the entire time I drove it.
2)
3.4L v6 in my 2004 Tacoma: Had one of the loudest idles I have ever heard....especially in weather under 40 degrees. It also had a very pronounced engine tick, although the tick was not as loud as my 1988 Toyota Pickup or 2006 Tacoma.
3)
4.0L v6 in my 2006 Tacoma: It is by far the most over-all quiet engine I have had in any Toyota truck that I have owned. It does make a ticking noise that I notice when I am driving next to wall or in a parking garage, but I can only hear it when the windows are down and even then I usually don't notice it unless I have the stereo on a very low volume setting.
Based on my experience with Toyota 6 cylinder engines I can say this: I'll happily take an engine that makes a little noise but has longevity over a quieter engine that becomes unreliable around 100,000 miles.
