AC starts with a terrible noise

It only happens if the truck has sat for a day. I start the truck and let it idle down a little. Then when I turn on the AC it makes a loud grinding bang. It only happens the first time after not using it for at least a day. After that no noise. Is it the clutch or compressor? Is anybody noticing this?

Well I thought this was such an oddball problem and I had never seen it on the forum so I didn't even search first. I slapping myself right now. Turns out this thing is somewhat common. There's a thread on it already Grinding noise from A/C compressor?
But there was no fix listed. The posters are acting like this is normal. Has anybody had this fixed?

I had the same thing. I thought it was the clutch so I brought it to the dealer and had them check it. They kept the truck all day and said that they couldn't replicate the problem. Everything was working as it was supposed to. So I told them I wanted it documented in the file just in case it failed in the future. It's been about 2 months since I noticed it last...so maybe it self corrected.

Take it in to the dealer and have them check it if it's still under warranty...if they say nothing is wrong, at least you have it documented that you tried to fix it before it was completely f?cked up.

Mine does it. I have an automatic by the way. I'm not sure what it is, it remindes me of when you drop the truck into gear from park when you are on a hill. That kind of "clank" sound. Like you, dl10, mine only seems to do it the first time I turn on the AC for the day. And it isn't consitant.

I'm there with ya'! Haven't heard mine in a few days. Been having relatively cool weather during the mornings and evenings so I've had the windows down.

mine does it too, i also took it to the dealer and of course it wouldnt do it there, go figure . it only does it every now and then, it will do it for a few days and then not for a week. when mine does do it, it isnt just the first time of the day it is most of the times throughout the day. if anyone finds out what this is let us know.

Some who've complained about the 'not very cold' A/C, found the coolant level to be a little low;usually followed by a noisy clutch engagement caused by small 'air pockets' or 'hydraulic lock' in the system. This normally can be remedied by having the dealer service the service the A/C with the minimum required coolant. There was another member over on Taco World recently complaining of the same thing. He took in into his local dealership for a recharge and problem fixed..
