New Tailgate

Hoping some people could help me out. I recently damaged my tailgate and it looks like it is too dinged up to fix. So I am going to need a new tailgate. I saw I can order a Toyota one (unpainted) for about $400 but I figured if I am going to get a new one I might as well get something unique. Has anyone seen a place to purchase a tailgate with the handle relocated to the interior for a 05+. I have seen the kits that allow you to do this but it would be nice to have a smooth tailgate. Thanks for the help!

If it got bent due to load Toyota has release a service bulletin TSB#BO004-07 to replace a bent tailgate. I would recommend going to your dealer and have the service dept. pull the TSB. They should be able to replace it with a new one for free provided it is a failure due to load.

If you messed up your tailgate and you have to buy a new one. I would order the Toyota one and the handle relocation kit. Take it to the body shop that's going to paint it, and have them install the kit. Make sure they weld it and clean it up so that you can't tell it's even there.

It'll probably cost you a nice shiny penny though.

So would a rollpan. I wish someone would take the time and put in the effort to mold a rollpan for these trucks. One that would cover the unsightly notch under the tail lights. I'd buy one in a heartbeat.

Thanks for the information. The damage to the tailgate was my fault. It was to the exterior sheet metal. Not from carrying any load.

You do bring up a good idea though... I have an 07, is the tailgate issue corrected on 07s? It would be a shame if mine fell victim to an overload :-)

Get a hold of a copy of the TSB and compare the top of your tailgate underneath the cap. I am not sure if and when they applied it on the production. If your tailgate still do not have the correction it is up to you on how you want to approach it.
