$140 for a new Key???

I need a second key for my Taco and was told by the local key shop that Toyota hasn't released the key blanks yet. So I went to the dealership and was told that a new key would be $140!!! $90 to program it (since there is an imobilizer chip in it) and another $50 for the blank. Anyone know of a cheaper alternative? I was able to get the keyless remote on ebay for $20.

The key chip has a new code. I do believe the new new code has to be programed into the trucks computer to accept it.

I've paid $80 awhile back for a Beemer key.

if you have the origional key, it should be less than $100 for parts and labor to program an extra. if you have no origional key, it would be closer to a buck and a half because it's another half hours' worth of labor to program the key to the computer, which will also leave any other keys useless.

Private business Locksmith guy close to my work saw my 07 Tacoma key one day and said he could make and program a replacement for me for $87 if I ever wanted one. I'd think that $140 is a bit high.
See if you can find a self-employed locksmith with the programmer. It'll probably be cheaper than the dealer.

I got one from a locksmith for 90.00 programmed, uncut for my remote start. The locksmith had a device that he plugged into the ODB port to program it. The "dot" at the top of the blank was particular and needed to be on the blank metal part of the blank. I bought one from another locksmith first w/o the dot and tried to do the pedal dance to program the key an ilsco blank w/o luck. brought it back and was told in a smarmy, how dare you question me tone that the key HAD to be cut in order for it to be programmed. He was pissed when I through the key back at him along with a copy of the key info from the other locksmith and demanded my money back...... No returns on cut keys he says. I open the cell phone and call the bank. When I say I'm disputing a charge in front of him to the person on the phone, I got a refund.. Fornicating rectal orifice......

Someone posted a thread called "found cheap keys" or something like that, it had a link to our keys. That wasn't too long ago either.

EDIT: Found the thread I was thinking of...
Here ya go.

Found us some Keys for our trucks

and here is an ebay link with an active auction...

eyedoc did you ever get an unprogrammed key? Did you program it yourself?

I bought one and had it cut, but haven't been able to program it using the instructions I found.

You will not be able to program it on your own, a dealership or a good locksmith will have the equipment that is necessary to program the key.
