complaints about speed control...

I was following up on the NHTSA reports about the 'surge' with the brakes and all, which occurs on my truck when I'm at a stop and not fully on the brake....

however I read the reports on mycarstats.com and I am scared shitless now after reading through them... there was over a dozen reports like this:

CONSUMER COMPLAINT: ODI Case Number: 10201655
Component: VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL
Details: OVER A PERIOD OF SEVERAL MONTHS AFTER PURCHASING A NEW 2007 TOYOTA TACOMA, I EXPERIENCED FIVE INCIDENTS OF BRAKE/ACCELERATION PROBLEMS FINALLY RESULTING IN A CRASH. FIRST INCIDENT: STOPPED AT A TRAFFIC LIGHT WITH MY FOOT ON THE BRAKE, THE TRUCK LUNGED FORWARD A FEW FEET. THE DEALERSHIP TOLD ME THEY COULD NOT FIND ANY PROBLEM. A MONTH LATER, STOPPED IN A GAS STATION DRIVE WITH MY FOOT ON THE BRAKE WAITING TO EXIT, THE REAR WHEELS BEGAN SPINNING OUT OF CONTROL. I PRESSED ON THE BRAKE AS HARD AS I POSSIBLY COULD TO KEEP FROM ENTERING TRAFFIC. THREE WEEKS LATER, APPROACHING THE BOTTOM OF A HILLY SHARP TURN, I TAPPED THE BRAKES TO SLOW DOWN. AGAIN THE REAR WHEELS ACCELERATED TO A HIGH RATE OF SPEED. I COULD NOT STOP THE TRUCK TO KEEP FROM STRIKING A VAN IN FRONT OF ME SO I CROSSED OVER A DOUBLE YELLOW LINE TO AVOID A COLLISION. IT TOOK ABOUT A THOUSAND YARDS TO GAIN CONTROL. THE DEALERSHIP SAID, "WE CAN'T FIX THE PROBLEM" UNTIL WE CAN DUPLICATE IT". I CALLED TOYOTA OF AMERICA, AGAIN ONLY TO BE TOLD THAT TOYOTA COULD DO NOTHING. THE FOURTH INCIDENT OCCURRED ON AN ENTRANCE RAMP TO A HIGHWAY. I TAPPED THE BRAKES TO SLOW DOWN. THE VEHICLE ACCELERATED TO A HIGH RATE OF SPEED. I GOT IT UNDER CONTROL QUICKLY. FINALLY THE FIFTH AND FINAL INCIDENT. COMING OUT OF NASHVILLE WHERE IT WAS RAINING HARD, I GOT FURTHER NORTHBOUND ON THE I-24 WHERE IT WAS RAINING LESS AND THE PAVEMENT WAS WET. WHILE IN THE SHOULDER LANE, A VEHICLE IN THE LEFT LANE STARTED MOVING OVER TO THE RIGHT CAUSING ME TO TAP MY BRAKES. THE REAR WHEELS ACCELERATED TO A VERY HIGH RATE OF SPEED CAUSING THE TRUCK TO HYDROPLANE. THE REAR END OF THE TRUCK SPUN AROUND TO THE LEFT AND, STILL ACCELERATING ON ITS OWN, DROVE INTO THE EMBANKMENT, FIRST SKIDDING SIDEWAYS THEN THE TRUCK BEGAN TO ROLL SEVERAL TIMES. IT STRUCK A RUT CAUSING IT TO GO AIRBORNE FINALLY LANDING ON ITS ROOF. IT ROLLED SEVERAL MORE TIMES COMING TO A STOP IN A DITCH ON THE DRIVERS DOOR. I WAS TRANSPORTED TO THE HOSPITAL. *JB

Anyone else seen this one before???

it would appear the accelerator sticks, ALOT

That's really messed up.. I've never noticed anything like that, but then again, I drive standard, so you would never have that problem when at a stop when clutching.

Sounds like a computer error, or electrical hardware malfunctioning.

I'm from the northwest I'm smarter than the average bear haha. ok i'm done with that...

yeah, its really messed up. I mean, sure if theres maybe a dozen or so reports on this site, I could assume its more like 1 in a million, but damn that possibility still bothers me, and to think there isn't a recall on something like this? wtf toyota?

if you guys want to read more check out http://www.mycarstats.com
and put in the tacoma. Lots of reports about the brake surging, but just as much about this problem. I 'm a little bothered to even think this can happen. btw, the website requires you to sign up with an email, but theres no personal information really...

It would appear that restarting the truck doesn't 'reset' the problem. Many of the reports claimed that they shut off their truck, took it out of gear and all the logical steps and it still red-lined the tach

Ever think that the guy couldn't figure out which pedal was which and kept slamming on the gas instead?

Wow!!! Something very similiar happened to me. I was passing on the left hand side of traffice when all of a sudden my engine went bizerk!!! I was about to rear end someone and i have my brake down hard. Not sure how long before things got back to normal but it was pretty hairy for a while. I ask a few guys at the H-Town meet if they had any issues and they thought it might have been me accidently hitting the cruise control. It hasn't happened since so i'm thinking it was me...operator error however I was on the breaks HARD with the engine still reving upward with no signs of stopping. Very Weird

Geez, I never had anything like that happen. But, I will say that the cruise control seems to be operated by a Mario Andretti wannabe when going up a hill with the cruise on. The thing downshifts to 3rd, and I become the leader of the pack, so to speak. This puppy jumps when it happens. Scary the first time it happened, but I expect it now and plan accordingly. The "Surge," only occurs when the A/C is on and I'm stopped. I stand on the brakes much harder when I'm stoppednow with the A/C on and she doesn't budge. Not to say she doesn't want to

Maybe if you have the 4banger with big tires, but if you have the v-6 you can stand on the brakes and the gas and turn your back tires into piles of rubber if you want to.

Some people panic way too quickly. If you are waiting at a light, intersection, or about to enter traffic and the engine goes wild - why not pop it n neutral and turn off the truck? That seems like a more logical choice than riding your brakes for a length of time and hoping for the best...

[quote=briangp]I'm from the northwest I'm smarter than the average bear haha. ok i'm done with that...

-i'll mention it, cause no-one else has yet.... if you're that smart? how did cape cod get to the north "west"?

i've had some acceleration problems when using the cruise control at freeway speed. sometimes, down shifting 2 gears .... scarey, and unnecessary. computer controlled, drive by wire.... if it fails, probably almost anything could happen.

i'd love to see the nhtsa get involved, and cause toyota to fix the problem in the form of a safety recall....

This sounds a bit like the Learning function of the Tranny is throwing a tantrum, or several of the computers are loosing integration and locking up at a last known good value thing.
