Picked up the 08 yesterday couple of questions

My 06 (non 4x4) DC auto would cruise down the highway at 80MPH at 2400 RPM. I would get 19.5MPG in that truck avg.

my08 4x4 DC 6sp is close to 2900 RPM at 80. I will have to slow it down to get any kind of mileage. Another shock was the window sticker (i had not seen one for an 08 yet) shows gas mileage as 15 city 18 hwy. I may not get close to what I got on the 06.

another question for 6sp owners. When I shift gears, the rpms wil stay at what they were when I engaged teh clutch and released the gas for what I consider to be a longer than normal time. The RPMs will rise a little when teh clutch is in and I am stoping. Anyone else experience the same?

anyways, I love the new truck. I can't wait to do a few upgrades (tint, exhaust, brush guard and maybe nerfbars?) headlight mod, fog light mod, dash board LED's to white (maybe radio LED's too). I am considering building another custom bed cover for this truck. I built one before. Very strong and will hold 6 adults on top of it. If I do I will post pics and details.

Assuming you had 4.0L in both?

The 07 Auto's are rated to get better gas mileage than the manuals.....and although I have no clue what gears I have ....the autos vs manuals are most likely geared differently.

My 07 TRD Access cab is rated at 18-21mpg. I think the manual was something like 17-19mpg??

I test drove both an auto & manual when I was looking at buying. The manual did the exact thing you describe - the rpm's would not drop while you depressed the clutch. That was something I've never experienced in a manual and I didn't like it......so I opted to get the auto instead. Some folks say 'you've gotta get used to it'.

In 08 the gov made the auto industry use a common formula to estimate fuel mileage. It's alot closer to the real mileage you will get. My 07 sticker said it would get 18/21, but I'm here to tell ya it's not even close. It's around 15/19 on my truck.

i think mileage really varies depending on how and where you drive. I've read some people saying they average 20 city and highway, others get better... some get worse than rated.

but the 08 truck is no different than the 07, just more realistic ratings.

are you surprised that the 4x4 gets worse milage than the pre-runner? Shouldn't be too much of a shock...

I have started to try and keep my highway cruising at about 200rpm (70mph on my speedo). That gets me 18.5mpg. If I just drive the way I normally do at about 2600rpm highway speed Ill get 15.5-16mpg.

The stick in geared lower, so over 70, mpgs drop. But it can get good mileage... been averaging 19.5 all summer, (not much stop and go), one trip got 22. Of course she's broke in, nearly 3 yrs on the road, full syn oil throughout. New, you'll probably get what the sticker says, but over time it will get better.

And yes the rpms don't drop when you clutch in.

The new 08 rating are 15/18 stick, 16/20 auto

it's mainly because it's running rich. i've heard the urd maf calibrator eliminates that problem, and also provides some other benefits. look into it if it bothers you.

Hey there,

I have a 4x4 4.0L AC 06 6 spd tranny, i actully took mine back to the dealer complaining about the engine runon when clutch is depresed. makes it funky to drive.

it does settle down. at least mine did. it now returns to about 1100 rpm instanly then it drops slow. but it does become easy to manage engine speed and clutch loading.

I really cannot complain about the gas milage. mine is pretty good on gas. on the hwy i prolly doing 22-24 usmpg... thats at about 70MPH seems pretty good to me.

also don't forget they are prolly doing there gas testing at 80-90KPH not 140KPH = 80mpg i think

cheers

It took me a while to get used to driving a "drive by wire" throttle system, although now that I am used to it I have no problems with it. Just realize that it takes a fraction of a second to react to your inputs (either applying or releasing the throttle). I always let off the gas just a bit before I push in the clutch, which seems to eliminate the hanging RPM's.

If you don’t romp on it, you’ll get the same mpg. I constantly get 19.5-20 mpg driving both freeway and city with my 07, A/T, V6, DC. On long freeway trips I've reached 22-24 mpg.

rich? I disagree. If you have a properly working computer then it won't be rich nor lean, but optimally mixed. lean/rich=carburetion.
