I recently purchased a new Pioneer AVIC D-3 Navi/DVD In-Dash Unit. I have installed all my previous head units in my past cars. I would love to install this unit myself but I am scared of the Navi/GPS portion of the install. Would it be easy to install or should I take the unit to a professional? I am at work at the moment and want to install it when I get home.
I want to make sure I know the problems before I decide .
I can pay someone in the SOCAL (626) area to install for me.
Thanks In Advance.

I've got the exact same unit in my Tacoma and considered installing myself at first but decided to leave it to the professionals in the end. Plus I got a pretty good deal on the install ($200 for unit, sirius, bluetooth adapter, ipod adapter, backup camera, and bypass). I did some research on the install and it didn't appear to be that difficult so much as it is time consuming. You can also go to http://www.avic411.com/forum/ for more information about the unit and installs in general. Good luck!
I had no experience with head units before installing my AVIC-Z1, and my install was a lot more complicated since I had the JBL system. It took me all day to install with the iPod, bluetooth, video bypass, and steering wheel control adapters, but it was worth it because I know I installed it right. Most of it is just common sense and some online research.
I really, really, really want to do this tonight when I get off work. However it might have to wait for my day off. Seems like I need to spend a whole day one it.

I posted the AVIC-D3 bypass. If you need help with it, let me know. I just got my Tacoma two weeks ago and am wiring up the new harness now!

Thanks. I am so interested on hearing how your install goes. My Pioneer just came in last night and I am looking at it. Just awesome.....now it needs to be installed.
Thanks everyone....I just really appreciate the insight.

THANKS TO EVERYONE FOR YOUR HELP!
If you don't have the JBL or steering wheel controls, I can't imagine this really taking long at all (I'd guess 2-4 hours, depending on your experience level). Still, I'd do it on your day off, so that you can take your time with the install and have plenty of time in the event something unexpected comes up.
installed the same unit in my brother's 2007 avalanche--and yes, i would allow a whole day--its a bigger unit, and taking time to guide wires and situate the unnit in the dash--all the wires were marked, and it was an easy hook-up, but did take a while to get it right.....i'd say it took a good 12 pack to get right!!
Well i'm a professional installer and it would take about 5 hours to install that If your doing rear view camera, sat, or any other accessories since you don't have much room to work with behind the radio. Also this install cost $140 at best buy and they include life-time warranty so that's a plus. Also your gona have to find the VSS wire which is behing the cluster or you can tap it straight from the engine. Over all it's time consuming so i would do it on my day off.
