i was stopped at an intersection yesterday after sending off some stuff at ups and this lady hits me from behind while i was waitin on the car in front of me to move. im like "wtf?" then i get out and she starts apologizing. before i got out of my truck i remembered i forgot to give my brother back his ball & hitch receiver from borrowin it for a big ride labor day weekend so i figured it didnt mess mine up. so i get out and look and the only thing it messed up was her front bumper didnt even get close to mine
good thing those hitch receivers stick out like they do otherwise shed be buyin me a new color matched bumper (which wouldve been nice)
im thinkin about leavin my receiver on forever bc its a life saver.
Glad you and the truck are ok! I thought for sure I was gonna be seeing carnage pics and a pissed off owner losing the truck to the body shop for a couple weeks!
I have 3" drop hitch on mine that I leave there all the time... Even though I don't have a trailer! I bought it thinking I'd use my grand father's trailer to move into our house. We ended up getting it rebuilt in time, but never got it inspected. And it's a boat trailer he put a bed on so it's too long to easily manuever. Needless to say I've only used the hitch to pull stumps and tow cars, but I leave it on just for what you had happen.
I figure even if it doesn't stop damage from a hit, it makes people think twice about riding my ass! That hitch could easily puncture most compact to midsize car's radiators and rip them out if I pull forward!

had the same thing happen so I left my receiver in, then it got stolen. If your going to leave it in full time get a locking pin.
i have a lockin pin i had for my 99 taco, but its too short for some reason, so i have to temporarily use the non-lockin one til i can find one long enough to fit.
and come to think of it, someone stole my toyota hitch insert that came in it from the dealership during the labor day weekend when i was back in arkansas

Mine's buried in the mud somewhere! I lost it a month or 2 after buying the truck when I made a 3-pt turn on some forest access trail.
Oh, another use for hitches is a bump stop! Mine tells me when I've backed up too close to a dirt pile, etc.

ill have to remember that... especially when i dont wear my glasses like im supposed to, ive been known to back up into things with every vehicle ive ever had... but then again i never thought my eyes were as bad as they really are. maybe i need one of those back up cams
And that's why I leave my drawbar in...cheap insurance incase of a vehicle colliding into my truck from the rear Also, if it's just right, it'll take out their hood, grill, and radiator to teach them a lesson

I got rear ended as well, unfortunately it was a full size chev, and it was a little higher than the hitch was, so my bumper still took the damage. The man paid for it all out of pocket though, some 800 bucks. Still leave the hitch in as a bump stop and 'padding' against the idiots that ride my ass around here. I have no problem brake checking little hondas!
oh and yeah, i got one, so i'd recommend a locking pin on your hitch
